Not a no spends day today. I need to go to the shop after work and pick up a few bits for the van for this weekend.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are from stores though. Breakfast was toast, we have both taken our packed lunches to work and dinner tonight is mixed fish in black bean sauce with noodles and spring rolls.

    Tonight's jobs are:
    • walking the dog
    • cleaning the bathrooms
    • vacuuming the house
    • putting the washing away
Plenty to keep us busy there tonight. We started the second series of Happy Valley last night. It looks set to be just as good as the first one. I think we will watch another episode or two tonight.

I've just started watching Happy Valley from the beginning and loving it so far. I can't get Mr SA interested unfortunately even though I know he'd enjoy it if he only gave it a chance.
I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)

Mr RS is as into it as me fortunately.
  • I've never seen Happy Valley, all the clips I see for it don't look particularly happy :D . It's never really sparked our interest.

It's good to see you doing so well. Idk I've taken a lot from your diary on here and also from people I have met in recovery who have similar lifestyle - time with family, lot of holidays and have a life outside of work I suppose. Tbh it's something I need to focus on and something my family would appreciate.
I'm pretty sure that nobody, ever, has had their last words on their deathbed recorded as "I really wish I'd spent more time at work!" so yes - prioritise the things that matter - and make the most of the time that you will never get back. Ultimately, what we need in life is "enough" - not great riches or wealth, or status come to that - just enough. Enough to live our lives, spend time with the people we love.

I watched the first episode of Happy Valley a few weeks ago and enjoyed it but haven't yet been back to carry on. MrEH obviously wasn't that struck as he hasn't suggested watching episode 2 yet!

    Fully agree with this.

There has to be a work life balance struck.

And equally when repaying debts there has to be a balance struck between making repayments but also making sure that you have enough left over to enjoy yourself and live your life.

Happy Valley gets better as the series goes on. We are enjoying it more the more of them we watch.
  • When we were clearing the mortgage one of the things we were rigid about was that we budgeted for fun stuff, and where we could work it into our budget to say "yes!" to invitations and plans, we did. We also had a rule that we never used the phrase "we can't afford" unless it was true - we preferred "we're choosing to prioritise our money differently" when it came to turning down certain things, or explaining why were were doing - of not doing - things in a particular way.

@EssexHebridean nothing has ever been 'enough' for me. I always used to think when I reached x goal I'd have enough but then y goal becomes possible and so it goes on. I'm still afflicted with it and still can't see what is 'enough'. From time to time I try to tell myself the way things are is 'enough' and I'm doing well enough for my family but I don't believe it. I try not to spend money on myself anymore. I am trying to make sure my wife and son enjoy their lives and I don't spoil that for them.
