Hi All
I've just had my one year old Dacia Duster serviced by my main dealer. Driving home i kept smelling fuel smells so lifted the bonnet to discover they didn't fit the oil cap. Oil has been spraying all over the engine causing a right old mess and I'm obviously worried this may have caused damage - i can see on the underside of the bonnet where it's 'fountained up'. I drove for about 15 miles like this. I'll obviously get onto the garage Monday when they open, but what would be the right corrective measures here?  I'm thinking getting the whole engine cleaned up, oil replaced, engine checked and write off the service bill - anyone think differently??   Really concerned there may be long terms issues as a result of this??

Check the level now and see where it is on the dipstick.  As long as its above minimum there is little chance of any long term damage.  A little oil can spray a long way.

Call and ask to speak to the dealer manager, tell them what happened and ask what they are going to do resolve the situation.  Also worth an e-mail to Dacia UK letting them know one of their dealerships is slack.

Engine clean, top up and maybe a token sum, but don't expect the service to be done for free.

I assume you have the cap so can drive the car?

    Dear OP
The only good thing is you are dealing with a main dealer as they will put things right A-Sap.
Check oil levels and if low, add the same type and keep the invoice - buy the amount you need ask Halfords/etc.
They will clean the oil and make good.
Technicians are only human and though not nice, these things happen its how they
    address them that counts!!
If there were going to be engine problems, your oil pressure light would have come on first then the engine managment light but
I don't thenk they have so you will be ok - but check the levels before you start the car again - call out the breakdown id car has that if rquired.
Evan on our Range Rover, they forgot to close the lid on the windscree filler - my OH just looked under the bonnet to simple check see if that was done often not. The Merc S class, the remote battiers were not changed as we sent in the keys with the battiers that would not remotely open, close the windows and the pan roof - so these things happen.
You will be ok, but imperative you check oil on the level before firing up your dream.

    I've calmed down now :)

I've checked the oil and its pretty much full so it looks worse than it is. I've cleaned it up and put the cap on (they left it resting on the engine). I'll chat on Monday - I'm not annoyed about the cap off as this is a simple mistake, but I have sheets of paper from them for the service with lots of quality ticks when they haven't given the engine a final cursory glance!
  • Certainly worth telling them of their error (benefits them as well as you) and depending on how you want your future relationship to be between you and them, see what they say, judge how happy/unhappy you are with their reply and take it from there.

Glad you didn't incur any major engine problems, as others have said mistakes happen, you might get a discount off next service or something similar?

You would expect ticks to mean that a job has been done. Not in car servicing! It often means they just can't be bothered doing that item.

IMHO - main delaers at least should video the service as this creates trust or at least video the new parts net to the car and parts changed but the full video idea is god - i am always weary they've not serviced our cars as they sholud ie lazy technicans becuse its low miles and they will get away with it.
Easy to check windscreen fluid when serviced as well as clean oil and or Mercs an old battery will open the boot and locks but not the windows/pan roor - or mark the battery - i will next time.

I would also suggest an e-mail today sent to the service department of the garage just so there is something on record.
