Mini is a surprise, based on my own empirical data, maybe they have improved a lot recently. ;)

so these surveys, what % of the owner numbers are surveyed? it would need to be 100% for the replies to be meaningful.
I had one sent me for my suzuki. I put it in the bin, it was pages and pages and pages of stuff- lots of free answer space not tick boxes, with zero reward for my time. I'd need a very strong grudge against Suzuki to wade through that- I suspect you'd only fill it in if you had a problem...
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Or maybe more XC90 owners took out the additional warranty but expected it to be a proper Volvo and
built to last the test of time.  A bulb failed call the warranty company, petrol gauge shows low call the warranty
company. What are the reasons for claiming on the warranties?

When they started these they published the actual claim values, some cars had a high % of claims but
the actual payout was very low.

How many breakdowns or warranty claims were actually where the drive could not finish a journey
rather than just a minor issue?  To me thats more important.

    Not to me.
My woeful Renault Nissan has been the most troublesome car I've owned. The paint was repelled from the wheels, bulbs last a few seconds, the boot lock only operates 33% of the time, the aircon filled the footwell with water, the steering wheel shook when braking, and the subframe fell off.

But none of these have prevented me completing a journey- the wheels still kept going round.

Same with the LandRovers I've owned. Pieces break off or stop working all the time, but I never had to walk home.

Very few surveys would target a sample of 100% of the available data. It's a bit silly to suggest that you need 100% to get a meaningful reply when the majority of surveys for all different things provide meaningful data with only a small sample size.

Even if it's true that only people who had a problem would fill out the survey then this would apply to everyone asked for every car model/make so that would make it a fair comparison.

A great post and a fact many are unware of, hence your post.
Unless a car is awful, we on the whole ignore these surveys but then do do extra research. EG, Range Rovers are given a very bad press but there is an awful lot to go wrong, but we have had minior niggles nothing that could not wait until next rvice, so no drama.

    So whats your point?
Landrovers are actually reliable? That would be taking it too far.

I was thinking about buying a new RR and discussed it with my mates. 4 of them had owned or do own RRs. 2 had no issues and recommended the car. The other 2 had lots of problems and told me to stay away, which I did.
RR/LR has been known to be unreliable for some time.

No, that’s not how statistics work at all.

We weare aware of Landrover woes but the RR is in a class of it's own so we had to go for it and experiences as per my previous post. Plus we have other cars so just in case it broke down.  Anyways, we always sell before their warranty runs out so no drama.

So mate what car you go for then, the Bentley or the Rolls SUV or the more reailable ones like the Rav 4 or whatever its called or korean, japan maker

I know how statistics work, and you can get pretty much whatever result you wanted out of them. :)

You need big numbers for the results to be significant.
If you only asked me, and the people that I know have had problems with minis, then you would conclude that minis are rubbish.
