I just checked Tesco.com for my postcode and the next 72 hours of slots are fully booked and then for the rest of the coming week there's limited slots available - mainly slots after sunset. Most of the AM slots for the w/c 30th August have already been taken. Now that may be a problem if someone was due to do their weekly shop tomorrow but develops symptoms which could be COVID-19 overnight. (I should add I'm not in one of the areas where there is currently a local lockdown.)silvercar said:
Firstly, that may have been true in lockdown, I am not sure it is still true.epm-84 said:
If everyone going abroad did that it would create problems for supermarkets. Supermarkets have already said they want shoppers who can go to supermarkets to not request home delivery due to a shortage of slots for those who actually need them.silvercar said:
I did exactly that, booked a slot for the day after we got back, just in case I was required to isolate. Can be cancelled the day before if you don't need it.Dr_Crypto said:I guess you could do a supermarket order from overseas with a delivery time after you return but I can’t see many people being that organised and planning their shopping while on holidays.
I get on with many of my neighbours but I don’t have their phone numbers (why would I?) and wouldn’t ask them to do more than pick up a bottle of milk and a loaf of bread. I wouldn’t feel comfortable asking even good friends to do my weekly shopping.
Secondly, It is only a subset of those going abroad to a country that requires quarantine on return that need to do it, certainly not those going abroad with no quarantine requirement.
What your second point should say only a very small subset of those going abroad can be pretty sure that the government won't change the restrictions for their destination while they are away. Most package holidays are for at least 7 nights and fly out on a Saturday or Sunday, while the government seems to have decided 4am on Saturday each week is the time when any new restrictions will be effective from, meaning virtually anyone going on a package holiday won't know whether they have to quarantine on return until a couple of days before they return home. If you fly out on Monday and back home on Friday then you're probably safe from the restrictions changing while you are away but even then it's not guaranteed. You even said in your earlier post you reserved a slot 'just in case' rather than saying you reserved a slot because you were travelling back from a country where you knew you would be required to self-isolate.0 -

Seems a collosal waste of a NHS volunteer resource to me but there we are.
In any case I am sure hundreds of people are nipping to the shops, rightly or wrongly.0 -
It probably isn't what they signed up for either. I think the original idea was they collected shopping for the vulnerable, those with possible symptoms and those who had been in contact with someone who had tested positivebradders1983 said:Seems a collosal waste of a NHS volunteer resource to me but there we are.

I suspect there are less people who fall into the original categories as (a) there are less people with coronavirus since a few months ago (b) more people are happy to shop for themselves (c) the availability of supermarket slots has increased (d) we now have bubbles and so the alone are less lonely.epm-84 said:

Remember they are volunteers though and they may have less time to volunteer if they are now on part time furlough instead of full time furlough. If I signed up to help people who were struggling through no fault of their own and was then expected to help someone who had just spent two weeks in Benidorm and travelled out against government advice I wouldn't be happy.silvercar said:

Did they? Or did they join up to help anyone that needs it, in order to keep our outbreak under control?bradders1983 said:Exactly the point, people joined up to help the disabled, ill and needy.
I help run a local volunteer network. At the start of the pandemic we had more people needing help than we could cope with, now we are turning away volunteers.
Just checked my local Tesco slots, I can get one for tomorrow morning.
I can't see any excuse for people needing to go food shopping at the moment. Quarantine is meant to be just that, not an opportunity to see if you can bend the rules in your favour.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. The thing that's important to remember is how badly COVID-19 is affecting the local area varies significantly depending which part of the country you live in. The North West region has almost 700 cases per 100,000, London has 425 while the South West has 250. Whatever part of the country you live in the situation locally is going to be very different to other parts of the country.silvercar said:
