I love a basic salad - lettuce, cucumber, cherry toms, a bit of red onion and some celery - with some slice avocado and a honey and mustard dressing. You need a nice ripe avocado but it's delicious. Sometimes it's all in the preparation - my OH loved veg but can be a bit fussy with salad, but he'll eat tonnes of it if it's all chopped up nicely and presented well.

I also love 'Greek' salad. Same basic salad as above but with some good black olives, chunks of feta and a dressing of good olive oil, red wine vinegar and lots of oregano.

    Hi Tiff,

Wasn't really looking for any judgments, differnet people like different things, doesn't make them a bad parent or a bad person.

I'm a perfectly happy healthy 32yr old who's trying something new and was asking for a bit of foodie encoragment.

If you have a fave salad or dressing please share.

No judgement, I've just never heard of anyone who's never had salad at the age of 32.

I dont have any salad ideas, I just bung things together and use whatever dressing I have, balsamic vinegar, mayo, vinaigrette etc. I make a lot of bean salads, rice salad and pasta salad using leftovers.

Try out fruit and veg singly as well eg. carrots, pepper, cucumber, celery, cut into strips; steamed green beans; whole radishes; thinly sliced apple or pear with a good pot of dip or humous - it makes a really tasty, easy lunch or starter. If you aren't worried about calories, mashed, ripe avocado on a slice of buttered  toast with lots of freshly ground black pepper on top is really, really scrummy and filling!
  • Balsamic vinegar is a lovely salad dressing. I also like salt and pepper or lemon juice on salad. My favourite things to include are gratted carrot, saltanas, nuts, cherry tomatoes, avacado, chopped raw mushrooms (not everyones cup of tea but I really like them), mange tout, spring/red onion, and sweetcorn. There are so many possible combinations you won't be bored, also using dressing (home made / low fat if doing healthy eating as some are quite high cal) can help to make foods you don't like much more palatable, then you can decrease the amount of dressing as you start to like the new foods. Good luck!

For lunch I just had gem lettuce shredded with baby spinach leaves, diced cucumber and orange segments. Then a little grated mature cheddar sprinkled over the top with some pitta bread on the side.

  • I just had a lovely salad at Pizza Express- rocket and baby spinach leaves, avocado, warm roasted mushrooms and parmesan cheese. This came with two dressings- balsamic and honey and mustard. It was lovely.

Hiya, I am also a very picky eater, I don't like many veg cooked but find them a lot more palatable when raw - I love raw carrots, red cabbage, fennel etc etc and you can make a lovely crunchy salad with those and can also add apples raisins etc to sweeten it I find a lot of lettuce/salad leaves too bitter but adore lambs leaf lettuce, rocket and watercress, the last two are quite peppery tasting x

I'm another person who is gobsmacked that you haven't eaten salads! I do find that in the winter months I sometimes have a craving for salad, even if it's only a bunch of watercress or a few leaves of lettuce.

Anyway, good on you for being willing to try it!

As other posters have said, salad is pretty much any veg. I don't add a dressing when I make a salad as hubby prefers his salad undressed, (ooer!) DS2 likes an oil and vinegar dressing, and I like salad cream. So we add whatever we like when it's on our plates.
