I like carrot and poppy seed - grate some carrots, moisten with a tablespoon of orange juice and at the last minute, stir in some poppy seeds for crunch.
I also like a diced apple, celery and mayo mix with a few pine nuts sprinkled in. I'm sure it's got a fancy name but I can't remember.
A friend of mine makes sliced tomato and onion marinated in balsamic syrup. That's addictive.0 -

Thanks again for all the helpfull replies :j
I love to cook and love rice and cous cous, seeds, nuts, raw carrots, sweetcorn and most fruits - had just never gone down the typical salad route of leaves etc....
It really is very helpfull to have the odd description of what works well together and also how the different types of leaves taste!
I'm all set with some leaves, carrots, got a couple of low fat bottled dressings - so wish me luck!
Over the past few years I have tried a few new things, sweet potato, mini sweet chilies and butternut sqush now being part of the weekly staple, so am hoping that I can add a few easy to put together salad dishes and make them firm favorites.
Thanks again - really hope I stick with it and broaden my tastes - who knows where I'll end up!!!

Well I am almost 46 and I have only started eating salad recently, I usually buy a bag of crispy salad, (I particularly like lambs lettuce), I make a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice and balsamic vinegar and I add sliced onion (usually red).
Unfortunately I tend to eat it with Tesco Finest Coleslaw and then either steak or chicken but I have to had my spuds with it.
Can't abide cucumber but my kids love it and have it as their snack at school.
I do eat other veg though.£2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far
+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.
Terramundi weighs 8lb 5oz0 -
Roasted butternut squash and red onions (just cube the squash, 'eighth' the onions, drizzle with oil and roast until tender) make a lovely salad, if you serve them on salad leaves with some crumbled blue cheese. This is nice on spinach leaves too, if you toss it all together with some lemon juice and black pepper. Or you can gently fold the cooked veggies into some cous-cous or ebly, and that makes a nice lunch-box lunch too - the veg lasts for a good few days in the fridge.0

my favourites are...
cherry tomatoes, watercress and grilled slices of red and yellow pepper (put them in while theyre still warm)
or
wartercress, some kind of crispy lettuce, grapes, little cubes of apple and toasted pecans/walnutsAugust grocery challenge: £50
Spent so far: £37.40 :A0 -
My new favourite salad leaves are pea shoots, they are very tasty amd quite sweet. I think you can only get them in sainsbury or waitrose at the moment.
I never bother making a dressing I just use balsamic vinegar.0 -

ioiwe - thank you, that sounds just fabulous! I'm definitely going to try that - it's going on the next meal plan. Both DH and I love black pudding, and the one we get here locally is gorgeous. This is also a change from the usual black pudding/apple/mashed potato routine. I can't wait to try it out.
Otherwise I also have a tiny challenge with serving salads: DH will eat any raw vegetable as a salad (except iceberg lettuce, but that's fine with me), but he has a problem with dressings. I'm still trying to find something he likes in that department, so will move on to the salad dressing thread. Right now I have to leave the salad undressed, and have my own bowl of vinaigrette and for him: Heinz salad cream! I find it a bit embarrassing, especially when we have guests, particularly French guests.
But the black pudding salad will hopefully not suffer the salad cream treatment (how awful would that be :-)"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -
