It's a curious thing this hike in kw price and standing charges for my 100% renewable energy electricity supply!

My E.On tariff end next month and I go from 8p per day standing charge to roughly 28~35p and from 12.5p per kw to anything up to 35p per kw...  :|

For some reason, all that renewable energy  has increased in price!

Neon Reef looks like the thinner end of the wedge even if it only lasts a few months!
I guess the argument is that the market value for a unit of electricity has gone up.

Interestingly, NR were straight on my case when they couldn't claim a direct debit on Wednesday. I had cancelled it, pending receipt of an actual bill, as I had never received one. So they CAN make contact when they want to.

Furthermore, it became obvious that they were using previous correspondence as templates and copying and pasting. However, if you are going to do that, obviously you need to edit and adjust appropriately before issue. Rather than issuing something that refers to another defunct supplier, namely Utility Point, that I have had no dealings with whatsoever. Schoolboy error.

Edit (Just to say that I had forewarned them 3 times already in writing, that I would be cancelling the dd unless they provided a bill, and stating that I would reject any financial penalty they might impose for dd cancellation.)
Oh, that doesn't sound very good.

Can I ask, since what date has Neon Reef actually been supplying you electricity?

So renewable energy profits from higher fossil fuel prices, in effect?

At no stage was I gullible enough to believe that 100% of my electricity came down the line from only renewable sources, that's just a marketing gimmick, as far as I'm concerned.

Despite the cost of wind and sunshine being the same as it always was, what do you think the rise in standing charges would be attributed to, simple profiteering?
  • Wind and sunshine seem to be at a premium at the moment. Although looking out of my window, it is currently both windy and sunny…

Thank God there hasn’t been vast, eye watering expenditure on wind turbines and solar panels, or the creation of massive infrastructure farms in the countryside. Oh…wait…

Sounds like yet another state sponsored con. Whatever happened to me selling the excess energy generated back to the Grid? And don’t mention those five beans I exchanged for a cow. Or was it a diesel car? Shortly to be an electric car. Nothing will ever improve on sliced bread, although there have been many pretenders.
  • As I (half) understand it 100% renewable doesn't mean 100% renewable but only that the non renewable generation has been 100% offset by carbon or whatever credits. Make whatever sense of that you can ( and let us have an explanation). Sounded like funny money to me when I had the same thoughts as you😨

Why, exactly, do you think it's curious?

It sounds like they've offered you a choice of fixed rate deals? If you decline those you'll drop onto their standard variable rate of around 25p/day and 21p/kWh. If you prefer the fox then you're going into it with your eyes open.

Renewable energy is expensive. Solar farms built 10 years ago are being paid 50p/kWh.  Wind farms built 5 years ago are being paid 17p/kWh.
Up uintil now you've not had to pay that price because they'be been subsidised by non-renewable generation under contracts for Difference. With the rise in fossil fuel prices, that subsidy has reduced or ceased.

Have two properties on supply with NF, came from Symbio. Escaped the SOLR process the moment the OfGem bulletin came out, I'm not entirely sure why anyone would bother switching to the SOLR supplier. Looks like I'll be getting 17p electricity for a few more days at least.

I've been selling to the grid for almost ten years and the quarterly payments are quite welcome.

The curious comment was simply me being facetious.

As far as I'm aware, we've all being paying increased costs for electricity to subsidise the so called renewable energy power generation roll out, for many years. Has this now been removed from the consumers bills?

Back to the fox comment, if I transfer to NR would that mean if they fold, I would then in turn just be put onto the 25p/day and 21p/kWh tariff?

The way the current subsidy for renewable power works is roughly like this.
    • Government agrees a "strike price", a guaranteed price that the wind / solar farm will get. For a 2016 wind farm this is around £150/MWh.
    • The wind farm then sells thweir power into the market at the market price. This could be £5/MWh (like it was briefly last night) or £275/MWh (like it was briefly yesterday evening) (numbers from https://electricinsights.co.uk)
    • At the end of the quarter, the wind farm is paid by the LCC £145 for each MWh it sold at £5, and it pays Ofgem £125 for each MWh it sold at £275.
    • If (as has always been the case to date) the LCC owes the wind farm money, that is met by a levy on consumers.
What should be evident from this is that high electricity prices reduce the levy, while low prices increase it. If prices are high enough, for long enough, the subsidy could be zero or even negative.
