    ... the £100 gesture of goodwill has become £95.24 and the difference is vat charge 4.76. I should not have to pay vat on a gesture of goodwill, otherwise I'd have had it sent to me and then used it to pay against my bill.
    Your not paying VAT on the goodwill gesture. The £100 includes VAT but they've taken the VAT off so  they can allow it against the before-VAT charges on your bill.

    What did you agree to, and how is it different to what you've received?

    Now I have had a bill, it's been extended by 3 weeks from last bill date, uses estimates despite the fact that I've given several readings and the £100 gesture of goodwill has become £95.24 and the difference is vat charge 4.76. I should not have to pay vat on a gesture of goodwill, otherwise I'd have had it sent to me and then used it to pay against my bill.
    Is this thru the app ? My web page hasn't changed since they cancelled the bill a few weeks ago.

    I agreed to getting £100, not £95 something.
    Re the bill, it just sat at the cancelled and replaced message so I had to contact the person who was sorting the gesture of goodwill. So the new bill is now on the webpage.

    You are getting £100, which is £95.24+VAT.
    Here's an example which might help. Imagine you owe BG £200. This is £190.48+VAT.
    • £200 - £100 = £100
    • £190.48 - £95.24 = £95.24 then plus VAT = £100.
    The end result is exactly the same whichever way you calculate it.

    Yes, it really is what you agreed to, they are deducting £100 from the amount you have to pay.
    They simply remove the VAT as they are applying it to charges before adding VAT.
    If they deducted £100 from your pre-VAT costs, they would be giving you £105 which is not what you agreed.

    Try this:
    Bill = £140 + VAT = £147 Less £100 credit = £47
    Bill = £140 Less £95.24 credit = £44.76 + VAT = £47

    My account has now been updated with a new bill of c£400 which I assume covers the whole period from inception in December to 26 March as all previous bills were cancelled and replaced. I’m having to ‘assume’ because it says the bill is ‘not yet ready’ to download. Will be interested to see what start date, meter readings they use.
