I have children and I fully understand the no children rule.

Excluding sleeping babies, when you have children with you, you can never give 100% attention to the job as you are constantly watching them to see what they are up to. Even if they are in a buggy and bribed with a biscuit, you still glance to check they are ok, breaking eye contact with the staff member. It's unfair on the sales assistant if you are not paying full attention.

The conversation flow can be interrupted by a child asking a question or pointing something completely irrelevant out ("ooh look there's a lady in a coat like yours", "is it nearly dinner time yet?", "I need a wee" etc.)

Even the most well behaved children have off days when they are badly behaved, and it's not fair on store staff if they are trying to explain things while your child is having a tantrum or generally misbehaving.

Some jobs like mobile phone enquiries or travel agent jobs go on far too long for a child, and are more likely to play up because they are bored.

I have done some jobs with my children in tow, but it is much easier doing jobs without them and I personally feel a do a better job alone.

I do agree Becles that in most ms cases, even if you can take the kids it is easier without them, which is why I am glad that my hubby's work is flexible and I have friends who can help out here and there. ;)

But, on the other side I have been asked to take my children along on an ms job specifically. Because ms-ing is supposed to represent mr or miss joe blogs in as natural setting as possible and I have had more than one survey that has asked specifically how a member of staff has behaved and/or interacted towards children. I agree that you do not want to make the salepersons life unduly difficult or distract yourself and that there is a time and a place, but I do think that in some of the scenarios you encounter for ms, in every day life a member of staff should be able to cope with children. (In fact, when I worked in a supermarket as a teenager we were encouraged to interact with the children of customers.)

Have to agree that as good as my wee ones are - they would never sit through a travel or phone shop :D

Could those of you who asked me to PM the company who MS Asda and those who asked for more advice please PM me and give me your email addresses. That way I can do one email and CC you all. I am delighted to help any of you as I appreciated every bit of the help I got on here.. It is just I spent ages today answering about 8 PM's and if I can do it in one email it will be quicker for all of us.

I hope no one is going to think me a big headed know all or anything. I think I have just been lucky as I was till last year a trained nurse so have spent my life writing reports so I am right up there with all the jargon about interpersonal skills, form a good rapport with people, compile accurate honest and unbiased reports etc etc. I also am a Glaswegian so am a "Right in your face" person and have sometimes phoned some of the companies and politely asked why this and why that. So I have got to know some of the people and got a much clearer idea of what they actually want from us and what is important to them and why it is important.

Some of them have told me they do understand there is a gulf between them and us over things like unrealistic scenarios due simply to lack of communication. The main reason for this is what is what the clients ask for so they don't have a lot of say in things like scenarios. And I got the feeling most of the ones I have spoken to do appreciate the difficulties we sometimes face.

I did a shop for a stamp shop yesterday and the guy at the counter was looking up the address - It had on my envelope 3 letters and then a buisness unit number. Anyway then he said really loudly "oh its going to..." and said the name of the mystery shop company! I hadnt worked out the letters when I stood in the queue. How stupid to send themselves a letter! So a woman in the queue laughed and two of the checkout people looked round. He was very attentive after that.
    Lol!
