Which exact model did you buy?
In regards to photo/video editing ... store everything on an external drive. Copy files to the computer when editing, then copy back to the external storage (and delete the copy on the computer). Your son should know things like this ... how old is he?
And what type of programming is he doing that specifically needs a Macbook Pro? (I'm guessing that he suggested it, because ... Apple. Does he have an Iphone?)2 -
I suspect that's what's needed. As I see it, JL don't have to accept a return because he's gone way beyond what would have been reasonable handling to determine suitability. Running out of memory was easily foreseeable if he knew he was going to be putting videos and photos on it. A quick calculation before purchase would have shown that.2

He's 16 and at the moment is getting heavily involved in programming . As far as I know he uses python , java and ruby I think . There might be more , I just heard these names .
I must admit , this was an impulse purchase without thinking and i now regret it .0 -
None of that programming requires a Macbook Pro ... you could have got a PC laptop for (probably) half that price that would be a better specification.6

The idea off being able to return good bought online is so you can inspect the item as you would if it was bought in store
And in the case off a laptop that would be visually seeing and feeling the item, getting a feel for the keyboards and functions
Anything beyond that would be deemed unreasonable
Regardless of weather the laptop can be factory reset or not, legally the item is used and second hand also it’s value is diminished

External memory is going to be by far the cheapest option, and for video and photography he is going to need several Tb of storage, so even with a much more expensive 1 Tb MB pro external storage is going to be needed at some point.1

I'm just surprised a 16 year old interested in programming didn't have the exact spec that he wanted ready for negotiation with you and on what areas he could budge on whilst screwing you for as much as he could easily argue.
Does your son know what he is doing?6 -

What are my rights here ? Is JL right that I cannot return for exchange or refund ?
If you notify them within 14 days (beginning the day after delivery) that you wish to cancel the contract then they are obligated to refund within 14 days of the goods being returned to them or you providing proof of the return providing you return the goods within 14 days starting the day after they were notified of the intention to cancel.
The goods may be returned as per the below:3) The address to which goods must be sent under paragraph (2)(a) is—
(a)any address specified by the trader for sending the goods back;
(b)if no address is specified for that purpose, any address specified by the trader for the consumer to contact the trader;
(c)if no address is specified for either of those purposes, any place of business of the trader.
They are permitted to make a deduction from the refund due to the handling going above what is generally available to you in a shop.
There is an exemption to the above, your post mentions they stated that the item was personalised, can you give details of this?
If the item was engraved with a personal message for example there wouldn't be any right to cancel. If you simply chose from a drop down menu (say the storage sizes 8, 16, 32gb for example) that isn't classed as personalised.In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -

TBH, you could've saved a hell of a lot of cash and purchased a very decent, linux based laptop if he's doing that sort of programming. I think your sons had you a bit getting you to fork out for a Macbook Pro.2
