Thanks everyone. I did the whole 'email not letter!' thing with all 3 of the debt collection agencies. One said they only had the option to send a letter, I escalated it to a manager who just kept repeating that- so I've got one coming. However he has said that it will be phrased something like 'thank you for your payment of the remaining balance' so if it is opened by husband I'll say that it was one of the smaller ones which has now dropped off the DMP. The other 2 agencies were brilliant and completely agreed to not send anything by post and have emailed me instead.
Hilariously (a bit of dark humour) I still had something like £4.82 owed on my HSBC credit card- so I had to ring them up again today; which they'll confirm by letter, I went to the initial person's manager, then to their manager and they'll now 'look into' whether or not they can send me an email. But again if they send a letter saying 'thanks for paying the last £4.82' then I'll rehash the above reasoning.
Finally- I called Stepchange at lunchtime and cancelled my DMP with them. The woman was lovely and really excited for me. She also immediately agreed to send an email and has marked my (now closed) file with instructions not to contact me by post. Wonderful company
Bottom line;
£49k paid off
Car HP paid off
Debt Free!
Saved Escape fund and moved out.
Current focus; saving Emergency fund9 -
