Where would you hide money?

Looking through some items we managed to take from the house, and we found bundles of £100... The old £10 notes so dad must have done this prior 2015.
So far they have been in vases, an old fashioned twisty cigarette ashtray and in amongst some old photos in the actual photo wallet (good job I looked through them.....)
I've never hid/hoarded money, so I'm guessing there's more I don't want to miss /throw out.
Husband said to even lift carpets, but do people really do that?
Where would your hiding places be?

Under floor boards is a good shout.
Loft. Any recess /access panels in walls.
Mattress. Amongst sthff in storage boxes. The freezer.
Never done it and rarely even have cash but realistically if you have found cash in like a vase it could be anywhere.2 -
Relative of mine , when her mother in law died in the early 1980's they started clearing the house and found £40,000 piled up by fireplaces , in tins , in wardrobes , under mattresses and in plastic shopping bags all around the house . She was of the "can't trust the banks " age group and never had a bank account .
Was a lot of money in those days , somehow they forgot to tell the tax people about itEx forum ambassador

I am afraid from my experience it can be anywhere.
If you are taking clothes out of the wardrobe you must go through every pocket, and shoes etc, don't discard anything without opening it and in the food cupboards make sure they haven't got one of the money boxes that looks like a tin of beans.
If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.3 -

I'm amazed this is so common....
Towards the end, dad did say he'd put some money in the front room, to help out with immediate bills, we found this (well what we think was it.....) but then didn't look further.
With mam dying and not being able to sort the house we took things like the box of family photos, this really old twisty ashtray which we remember playing with (we don't even smoke.....) and just little sentimental things that, heaven forbid, if the house was broken into, we would be pleased we 'saved'.
It was when I decided to look through the photos that I found the old £10notes....
We won't back at the house for a few weeks at least but we now know to double check everything....
Dad was 83 when he died in 2015 and did have money in banks, this was just what we thought was a 'little' house emergency funding.....Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....0 -
Another place I have remembered is inside books. Many years ago after a neighbour had died my husband was given his gardening books and guess what as he opened one £200 fell out.If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.2

When we were sorting my Grandmas clothes my aunt noticed a 10 shilling note wrapped up in a pair of stockings, so we had to start again, and found a 10 Bob note or a pound in almost every item of neatly folded clothing and linen.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Competition Time, Site Feedback and Marriage, Relationships and Families boards. In a RAF quarter once whilst doing an annual deep clean of the stair carpet I spotted a bit of paper sticking out from underneath it. I pulled it out and found a tenner - further searches were fruitless but it came as a welcome bonus to us.

It may not be just money. When a friend started clearing out her mother's flat, she threw an old matchbox into the bin but heard a rattle - on opening the matchbox, she found a very valuable diamond ring. She had to go through absolutely everything in detail and found loads of jewellery and cash that would otherwise have all been thrown out.2

My Husband annoyingly puts money in books, only £10 or £20 and to my knowledge only done it a handful of times. But I think he does it as a little bonus to find next time he reads the book. But we have lots of books, and I just hope it's been put in books he's kept rather than taken to the car boot...
But I have known of two older people that hid money, one put it all under the carpet in the spare bedrooms, it was back in the early 90's but that was in the thousands and a few years back my Uncle's stepson's gran had around £20,000 in cash at home, the grandson and Mum kept it quiet from the rest of the family and split it between them. Thinking back I think the money was discovered when she went in a care home with dementia rather than when she died.Make £2023 in 2023 (#36) £3479.30/£2023
