Loved our trip to the West Coast USA. Death Valley is the place to go!
  • Hi
I just seeking some information about a flight refund. I just would like to know if the airline is telling me the right thing. I have booked two flights with Ryanair back in February  before Coronavirus outbreak.  The flights were cancelled and I have Requested  a refund online.  I have been told over a live chat it will take up to 28 working days which was fine I understand the circumstances and I was happy to wait 😊But since then I have received an email saying they have issued a refund voucher. I have rang the customer service to decline the voucher and request a cash refund. Ryanair told me they can’t process a cash refunds until the pandemic  is over . I just would like to know where I stand on this issue ? Are  they are telling me this just to delay the process  or is this the actual law ?? I did my research and some other countries have got that law in place but as far as I know it’s nothing official for Uk ?? Can you please advise on this issue.

Under the law you are entitled to a cash refund within 14 days of your flight being cancelled.  But very few companies are meeting that deadline at the moment, due to the volume of refunds to process and the fact they have very few staff around, or working from home etc.

Most of the industry is going down the "voucher now, refund later" route.  There's been no change to any UK law, but the industry is doing what it's doing.  It sounds cliche, and it's repeated often, but we are in unprecedented times etc.

Take some comfort that the Gin at home will be significantly cheaper than the €9 it would cost on a Ryanair flight  ;)

... and don't forget the tonic - or perhaps with the extra cost of that, yes; just forget it!

Adding an alternative view. I just received an email from Opodo regarding the car rental cancellation I requested for the same trip as the cancelled Ryanair flights. They too have gone down the voucher route but are offering a 25% top-up (subject to a £/€50 cap) to the value of the voucher. But it would appear my refund is still progressing and if I want to take up the offer of the topped up voucher I have to click a link to select this option. Now that is the way to do it.

I'm not planning to play the online 'Chat' game Ryanair suggests it do, only to be told I can't have a refund 'until the COVID-19 emergency has passed'; when is that? who will be the judge of that? I hoping that MSE staff will spot this new Ryanair tactic and take them to task over it. I know times are tough but you still have to play by the rules.
