Well done Endless Struggle, hopefully you get to spend Christmas in your new home!

I went on and made my very first overpayment this morning for the grand total of £1.  I just wanted to see how to do it.

Payday is next Tuesday and I hope to make at least a £50 overpayment before the end of the month.
I did exactly the same at the weekend with a £1 overpayment to test it out. I started my new job today and I believe I get paid next Friday. But it will only be a small pay check as I will only have been at work for two weeks. I might only get one weeks wages or I might get two. Then I will be paid four weeks after that as it is four weekly pay. So tonight is redoing my spreadsheet with estimated pay figures for the rest of the year. And of course emptying more boxes! I think I will be emptying boxes and bags for a while yet. I have also done a list of what I need to get done tomorrow.
I’m also waiting for the schedule of mortgage payments to come through so I can update my spreadsheet. Can you tell I like planning everything!

I love planning to and updating my budget spreadsheet!  I get paid next Tuesday and I have a backdated payrise in it from April.  So that will provide something towards the first proper overpayment.

Im the same bags and boxes but have them confined to two rooms.

Im having family round on Saturday nibbles and drinks so need to get most of it away by then.  Its starting to feel like I live there now.

@lantanna good to hear that “it’s now feeling like home”! Always good when people are coming over as that gives you the extra push to get things done. Lucky with the back pay, nice to have extra money after moving in.

How’s everyone getting on? I’m having a healthy week after the housewarming at the weekend. First ever mortgage payment comes out tomorrow!
  • Well I seem to spending more money than making overpayments. I found a leak on the outside but it’s actually leaking under my bath. So had someone out to have a look and then couldn’t find the external stopcock. So had to call the water company who said it would take up to two weeks to send someone out as it didn’t have on their records about where the external stop was. Half an hour later, there was a knock on the door and it was the water company. Found the tap and the plumber is coming back tomorrow to hopefully fix the leak. Unfortunately the external tap services three properties, so I will be talking to me two neighbours tomorrow to tell them the water might have to be off for an hour or so.

Then I’m still trying to empty my old property but that is hopefully moving in the right direction, I have sorted a house clearance company and a cleaner to clean the kitchen and bathrooms. So one more trip with a van to clear the last bits of furniture and the bits from the loft and it should all be done.

That’s good your mortgage payment comes out tomorrow @lantanna. I have to wait until 3rd October for my first one. I am hoping by then I can see what the monthly interest will be and I am going to try and overpay by at least the interest each month as well as rounding up my usual monthly payment to the nearest hundred.

  • You're doing better than me @lantanna - I've not fully unpacked yet!

Finances slightly derailed by my car needing a four figure sum spending on it, so no overpayments this month. Thankfully first payment due out on 1st October, so I've had a month without rent or mortgage to help me survive it. But still, thank goodness for emergency funds. Should be able to make a £200 overpayment with that October payment.

@mumoffourkids it feels so much better when you get rid of the old place and that stress is gone!

    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Your time will come, I’ve still loads of unpacking and sorting to do. Plus I’m still on a mattress on a floor.  I can’t believe it’s Weds already I’ve so much to get done this week and need to be getting on with it! But yes it’s great all in all.

You’ll be in your place soon enough. Fingers crossed it’s a smooth journey for you.

Today I had to pay out to get a leak fixed. And also to get my old car fixed so I can then sell it. Am hoping to get around £2500 for it so I can then allocate some to overpayments and some to doing work on my new place. I feel like I should do another overpayment to my mortgage but I don’t know how much the work is going to be that I want to get done at first. This includes shelves being put up, a bed base being built including storage and some new carpets. That’s the first stage of work. The second stage includes fixing or replacing decking in the garden, sorting out the summerhouse so that it is usable and probably decorating a few rooms. This doesn’t include any other emergency repairs that may crop up. I think I need to increase my home maintenance pot as I think it may be used quite a bit over the next few months.
