Will be working on sides and doors this week. Need to make some door handles from scratch and weld them on. Need to paint wood for sides and doors then screw the wood on. Can not believe it myself that there is actual units!I actually really like that metal effect and all the bare metal. Please post pics when they all up.
We are doing soldering next week I think in DIY class on plumbing joints - this week was carpentry joints and I was happily sawing and chiselling away by the end despite never having done either before.
I saw some glorious tables and bar stools recently all very expensive and I did think 'Oh I could learn to weld like Sister Gold and make them myself'- did you go to class to weld or was it all self taught after your various classes and home DIY/?
@SuseOrm your ceiling fell down?! Glad you OK.
Hope everyone is settling in their new homes - i am also eyeing up a heated throw..@EndlessStruggle so good to know you love it
Also your cabinets look awesome Sistergold. I’m always afraid that anything I put up on the wall will fall down so I’m in total awe at yours staying up.0 -

Also your cabinets look awesome Sistergold. I’m always afraid that anything I put up on the wall will fall down so I’m in total awe at yours staying up.Little but vital things like being told to make sure to always have both hands busy when using a chisel so either both holding the handle or holding a mallet .. all little things that make it much safer. Plus the teacher watches and gives tips on better body position or body movement which was vital when we plastered. He can see what we are doing and where we needed to correct.
Equally having someone there to talk through using a SDS drill or a saw or a jigsaw for the first time .. and being there to ask as you practice, is for me so helpful and allows me to do everything safely and with confidence.
in other things in life eg software, new ideas or cooking I will just work it out but I have zero diy experience beyond painting and I have fears of losing a finger. YouTubers don’t always know best practice H&S or explain what they are doing to be safe.
You may be better than I from a DIY start point so book learning could be great in that case.I waited 6 months to get on this course but maybe you could do a weekend or one off one day courses rather than a weekly set one if that’s easier for your schedule? Then when you are more confident in the areas you feel you need to learn then a book would be betterDON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff. Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

John Lewis have a £15 off if you spend over 150 code at the moment I think it’s JL off 15 but I will doublecheck and they have heated throws in stock so I thought too which took me over the spend threshold0

@Sistergold I'm definitely in awe of those cabinets! Will be exciting to see them develop.I have quite a few plans of things I want to do and I think I will probably run out of money if I get tradesmen in to do all the work. One of the big things I want to do is to revamp the back garden including changing the decking for paving slabs and maybe some grass?2 -
Kitchen diaries
Oh good morning laddies
So I hope you have all been okay all over the country? We are now beginning to experience a bit of cold weather in London. Hope no one is “freezing” yet? This cold whether leads me to think “oh how will I proceed with welding out in the cold”? So I am trying to speed up the process of cabinet making so that I move things forward quickly while it’s not to cold and wet yet. I also want to have a better kitchen this Christmas as I feel I have just been coping for the past 3 Christmas I have celebrated in my house. So far as you know 4 wall units are up and there is three more wall units to go. As of yesterday I have managed to cut and weld frames for 3 floor cabinets and will work on them today and see how far I can go. Frames are done, hinges have been welded to door frames and need to added metal bits for holding the wood which includes shelving. Then will need to paint it all and cut up worktops and oh there is castor wheels to add. Castor wheels means I still need to make and weld on mounting plates! I must say making the frames and welding on the hinges was much easier on this second lot of frames. Did the three much quicker over about 2 days. Yes it sounds slow I know but believe me it was fast compared to last round. The workmanship also much neater I 🤔.That’s just one of the units while I was processing the frame and door frame. All the protruding bits there are spacers so that doors can swing freely.I am really, really pleased with the outcome so far. I know I know it’s not a magazine type kitchen, not a glossy kitchen BUT in my eyes it’s all good. It’s like how every mother thinks their baby is the most handsome/beautiful child ever born!Anyway I am up bright and early as you can see from this post and with some luck I can finish off the 3 units I am working on. It’s a total of 16 units to be made and thus will be 7 so far. I am just pushing to get to 8 so as to feel that at least half have been done and half to go! I REALLY NEED THIS KITCHEN BY CHRISTMAS!
