I am so impressed with the welding! wow..
I have been in touch with the local college that is doing the  home maintenance DIY for ladies course - and waiting for it to be scheduled. Its free so I figure I will start there and then see what course yet to do.

@Sistergold can you remind me of the places you went to for the courses? Which has been the most useful...

@lantanna congrats! I think you will feel like a proper MFWer when you all sorted. I am a year out I think from buying what with house prices/rates and my earnings so I am looking forward to it but appreciate finding the right home then all the contract stuff is stressful.

No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

Congrats Merlins Beard, are you pleased with it ?
So far! Snagging survey is tomorrow so keeping my fingers crossed they don't find anything major, then floors down from Tuesday. Then it will properly look like a home!

@Lantana, I can imagine the wait! Lol, the bathroom will be stunning as you would have chosen it for a reason. I remember some years ago I chose some crazy mix of colours for the kitchen tiles and my then husband was like what? I also then started doubting my choices but the tiler had already done the job. I then agreed with the whole family that we can not rip them off straight away and decided we will keep them for a few months. We ended up keeping the same tiles for as after a few days everybody was like actually they are beautiful and make the kitchen colourful and bright. I like bright colours you see. Some choses can shock you once they have been installed but after sometime you will see why you chose them. So whatever it is give it time.

@Friday1989, you are right it’s easier ri save when there is an exact goal to save for! Good luck with the carpenters.

I would love to do something similar to these courses as it is getting so difficult to find someone to come round to do just a few little jobs, plus doesn't cost a fortune for the privilege.  I have my brother who has helped me, but he has plenty of things in his own house that he needs to get done so I don't like to ask too often, hence why I still don't quite have everything sorted in my room!

Thank you, yes excited but also looking forward to getting a good nights sleep tonight. Been stressful in the run up but at least I know it’s all done now.
  • Very very excited as I am doing a 10 week DIY course from next week all inspired by @Sistergold!

Have been waiting on places on this course for months as its free - its for women only which is great - and covers lots of aspects. So they emailed me yesterday to say they have a spare place - I called and emailed back to make sure! Fingers crossed  I am on list  - 3 hours x 10 weeks.

We start with plumbing 101 including cisterns - who knew I could get excited about plumbing - one week we will be building plumbing joints! ;)  There is even a bricklaying week - I will be building a fireplace next ;)

I was looking online and its all £150-£160 a day for courses so this way I can learn basics of most things for free - so MSE -including an evening on electric drills... and then see next steps..

I will not be welding ;)

Currently power tools terrify me and i have always rented so I have decorated  and got men in to drill but thats it. I really feel learning these new skills take me to the next step in being a property owning woman!
    Tx for inspiring me.

I am waiting on some old big invoices to be paid to up the deposit savings and then I really could be thinking of buying but I may well wait til next year looking at current economy etc - at least looks like there will be a energy cap to help now at £2500 - I am hugely under average  usage anyway - before I start wielding the power tools anyway!

I am now back in london far away from my Ms Doolittle life - I am definitely fitter though after the 18.5k steps a day chasing after animals and hauling horses, horse food, hay, argumentative dogs....

Congrats @lantanna - what a great next step on your life journey.

  • Hi ladies, I have just found this thread and it seems it is just what I need at the moment, so I’d like to join in if you don’t mind.

Today I completed on my new house bought all by myself and saved up for by myself. It’s just me and the kids, although there are five of them so we needed a reasonably decent sized house. I have been renting for the last 8 years since I split from my ex husband and I knew I wanted to buy my own place at some point. And today I finally did it. My mortgage isn’t as large as some, but for me it is big enough especially as I only work part time due to having five kids and no family support.

Anyway, I plan on overpaying but also decorating and doing work to my new house at the same time, so my money has to stretch and be budgeted down to the last penny to make the most of it. Anyway, must sleep now as I have a long day moving furniture and other bits tomorrow.
