  • Hi ladies, I have just found this thread and it seems it is just what I need at the moment, so I’d like to join in if you don’t mind.

Today I completed on my new house bought all by myself and saved up for by myself. It’s just me and the kids, although there are five of them so we needed a reasonably decent sized house. I have been renting for the last 8 years since I split from my ex husband and I knew I wanted to buy my own place at some point. And today I finally did it. My mortgage isn’t as large as some, but for me it is big enough especially as I only work part time due to having five kids and no family support.

Anyway, I plan on overpaying but also decorating and doing work to my new house at the same time, so my money has to stretch and be budgeted down to the last penny to make the most of it. Anyway, must sleep now as I have a long day moving furniture and other bits tomorrow.
Congratulations! I hope everything goes smoothly over the next few days as you move.
Start mortgage date: August 2022; Start mortgage amount: £240,999; Original mortgage free date: August 2056
    Current mortgage amount: £226,957.97
Start student loan 2012: £29,750; current student loan: CLEARED July 2025
  • Thank you ladies. Well I’ve done two runs in the van and have most of the day to day stuff in the new house. Just got to sort it all out now and put it all away. It’s too late to do that tonight. Then all that is left in the old house is basically my sewing stuff and loft stuff and an absolute tonne of rubbish. But I have three weeks to get it sorted so fingers crossed another two trips but probably just in my car will have it all in the new house. But only after I have sorted all the stuff that came in the van today which included the incredibly heavy washing machine. But it’s moved now and plumbed in ready to put the first load of washing on tomorrow. Don’t want to put it on tonight, just in case it leaks.

Also my mortgage is already showing on my Nationwid3 online account so I’m thinking of sending across a £1 overpayment, just to see what happens. I have already got some money saved up for a mortgage overpayment, but just thought I would try with a £1 to test it.

Well done and I am LIVING for the fact you are trying to OP before you even slept in your new home and mortgage! Genius ! SO MFW ;)
If/when/ever I buy I will follow in your footsteps

@Sistergold I will be reporting back on how it goes including any injuries -hopefully just the odd broken nail at worst. Monday is plumbing, cisterns, pipes so hopefully nothing too sharp. Next Monday is the scary drill day.

    DON'T BUY STUFF (from Frugalwoods)
No seriously, just don’t buy things. 99% of our success with our savings rate is attributed to the fact that we don’t buy things... You can and should take advantage of discounts.... But at the end of the day, the only way to truly save money is to not buy stuff.    Money doesn’t walk out of your wallet on its own accord.

@Mumoffourkids, an OP of a £1 sounds like a good idea as a trial run! You are all set and keen to OP and with this attitude your mortgage will be going down very fast, it does add up and over a few years OPs make a difference little or big! It is also good you have an overlap between the two properties to move stuff gradually it takes away the pressure.

@LadyWithAPlan, I am sure you won’t injure/break a thing lol. Drilling is the most useful course in diy I think as it helps mount and fix things, plumbing, bricklaying etc is something one does here and there. Well my advice is master your drilling and screwing and what screws, plugs fixture for where and you can manage your home on your own. You will be such a pro before you get your house though I know. Where do they run these free diy course for woman if I May ask? X

Thanks that’s me in and my fourth night in my new home. So much to get done and work out. Setting my alarm for an early start so I can get a couple of hours in before work.
  • I've been meaning to pop in but it's been a busy 6 months!

I got the whole house repaired, repainted, recarpeted. refurnished and then I sold it *lol*

I've managed to walk away with 15k profit which will cover everything I need to do in the new house.

The new house is probably a bigger project than this was but it's closer to family.

Hoping to complete and move before Christmas.

Well done Endless Struggle, hopefully you get to spend Christmas in your new home!

I went on and made my very first overpayment this morning for the grand total of £1.  I just wanted to see how to do it.

Payday is next Tuesday and I hope to make at least a £50 overpayment before the end of the month.
  • It isn't looking likely as probate could take much longer than expected.

They say 8-12 weeks but some are taking 6+ months at the moment.

The next house needs a new kitchen, new windows, new front and back doors, new internal doors, complete redecoration and recarpetting.

I also want to knock out two windows and replace with french doors and have a sun room built.

The garden also needs a lot of work.

I don't make life easy for myself hahaha!
