Will lockdown affect house move?

  • Things are still as clear as mud here.  As mentioned earlier, I was due to move into a rental property on 4th April.  I've now heard that the previous tenants had moved out prior to the lockdown & the landlord's expecting me to move in as planned on the 4th.  Trouble is, my removal firm won't move me during the lockdown - and even if they were prepared to do so, it looks like it'd be breaching the lockdown regulations as the move isn't 'essential' (I won't be homeless if i don't move on that date).  I'm trying to find out where this leaves me - but I suspect the answer is that I'll be paying full rent on a property I can't move into for weeks / months <sigh>.
You could try and come to an arrangement with the landlord e.g. half rent until you are allowed to move? It is neither of your faults so sharing the burden seems fair.

Yes - you're absolutely right!  That's the tack I'm going to try next, if they really won't budge on the start date.  I have a horrible feeling that they won't come to an arrangement, though - I've seen no evidence of common sense thus far!

Hope others are managing to get some clarity on their own situations.  Anyone managed to make any progress yesterday/today?  If all else fails, I can highly recommend chocolate biscuits and coffee as a sanity-restoring measure ;)
  • I am wondering if some removals companies will begin working after the guidance issues yesterday on working in other peoples homes?

My friend is due to exchange tomorrow and move on Tuesday. His removal firm rang him yesterday to say they will be carrying on with his move

Likewise - I've been in contact with my movers for my move in two weeks time - they said they are still operating as normal. Similarly, I had a colleague move last night using a man and van.

Empty purse - is it possible to try different removals firms / different movers? Alternatively, could you hire a van yourself?

Due to exchange / complete today. vans packed 11:00am got a phone call from my solicitor to say other sides solitcitors director had decided the move was not within the govt. advice and therefore it will not go ahead. gutted is not the word.
I thinks it's because we hadn't exchanged so there was no exisiting contract, so its against advice/guidance/rule (delete as appropriate depending if its govt. law society, govt advisor - who knows) to move at this stage.
Solicitor was contemptible to stop at this stage after removal men had already been and packed van, (at all 3 points in chain) and had to unpack it, so there was no limitation (of the correctly observed social distance) of exposure in any case beacue they had to unpack the van, just back into the same house. complete back covering, their client was, I know for  fact, crying on the phone to the estate agent beacuse she couldnt move.
