The build quality of the cars is very poor. Customer services is dreadful. The competition, while seriously behind, is coming from big players who actually know how to build cars.
The few people I know with Teslas from a few years ago have all said the customer service has been good, as you would expect from a brand operating in a niche wanting to grow market share through word-of-mouth among other methods. In the US they have topped the Consumer Reports charts for overall satisfaction for most of the last ten years. However, they rank last on JD Powers US initial quality survey with way more faults than average, and they don't even feature in the same company's US 3-yr dependability survey because some states require the manufacturer's permission to contact customers, which Tesla doesn't grant. What you can infer is that Tesla buyers - who are paying a premium price to get something 'really cool' - are willing to overlook faults because overall, they still feel they have got something cool.

The same cool kids were willing to shell out for iPhones when Android smartphones had more performance and features for less money, and iMacs when PC laptops had more performance for less money - Apple became a trillion dollar consumer electronics company.  As personal transportation moves from being 'plant and machinery' to 'consumer electronics' it's not clear that Tesla's market positioning and cult following is going to hinder its goal of world domination.

I do generally agree that its moves in the battery space are probably more interesting than being able to churn out cars on a production line (which is something that tens of other global car companies have plenty of experience in doing). While having something cool will help convert people to the EV cause, there are lots of cases in the past where being a pioneer in an industry didn't actually result in getting the eventual most profitable position within it.

Amazon is classified as a retailer. Is Tesla a technology company or a motor manufacturer?

Their exclusive chargers was in the hope that other manufacturers would use the same coupling. As was the case with BetaMax and VHS. Eventually mass market VHS won the day.

In contrast they topped the JD Power APEAL survey.
JD Power surveys arfe not that telling...for example the survey that put Tesla at the bottom had Dodge on top. The way that that survey works is that any query from a customer scores equally, so for example a customer contacting the dealer as they don't understand how the radio works scores the same as a customer contacting a dealer because the gearbox had fallen out of the car.

Tesla down to 1420 could be a good entry level.

The single piece casting machine for Model Y has been installed in Fremont.

"Will be amazing to see it in operation!
    Biggest casting machine ever made.
Will make rear body in a single piece, including crash rails.

It's the very definition of disruptive technology.
Tesla is more than cars. I can see their energy side becoming a big player. Look what they did to the frequency market in Australia when they installed the Hornsdale Power Reserve. They are moving into the power market in a big way with the concept of a Virtual Power Plant which will use the vehicle batteries and Powerwalls to supply power back into the grid. Their Autobidder software will be key to that.

There's confusion around Tesla V2G (vehicle to grid). So far their cars are not bi-directional chargers, but some reports that the model 3 will soon be able to do this. Maybe Tesla doesn't want to compete with t's own Powerwall?

    There's a V2G trial in the UK...

I believe that the latest M3s are bidirectional.
The problem with V2G is that it looks like CCS will become the standard. And that doesn't support V2G (facepalm)

No, that was a misunderstanding spread round the net as fact by someone about three months ago and then disproved but as with all these things, the bad info lingers indefinitely.
