Bought 4 from April 2018 - May 2019, £200 average, knowing it was already overvalued, but a. I like the management b. they're trying to create genuine human value c. I want one and d. all my serious money is in index funds, originally planning to hodl like there's no tomorrodl. To date this is the most irresponsible financial decision I've made.
Sold one earlier this year when the price got so ridiculous that the profit paid for the other 3, so at worst I'd made 0%.
Then the price departed the realm of economic sanity.
So, begrudgingly, I forced myself to sell one more, at worst I've made ~£1,100 cash "profit".
Why can't people just leave it alone?
Imagine what'll happen if he ever makes SpaceX public.

LOL. I bought 4 last week for a quick buck, if they pop to $2k I'll sell those.
I'm keeping the rest until maybe $2.5k-$5k each.
And I would definitely buy into SpaceX / Starlink.
At this rate you might not have to wait too long for the price to reach 2000 to sell those 4!

I'm keeping the rest until maybe $2.5k-$5k each.
And I would definitely buy into SpaceX / Starlink.
If you do think it could reach $2.5-$5K then now is probably a good time to buy more as the price has dipped to around $1500?

US $ has been slipping against major currencies recently as well. Most likely due to the incoherent inept response to Covid.

I'm short since day before results - it initially spiked up, but fortunately the September market is currently down to about $1486 which is about 6% lower than my $1574 entry.  Not a 'hold it and roll it forever' position though, as I'm sure that some people have made big losses trying to short it in the past when the market gets excited for one reason or another.

Its a question of how much I've got. Its a substantial amount.   And I'd have to sell something, either some of my more cautious investments or use up cash (and go unwrapped) which i dont want to do. I'm pretty sure its going to go to $2.5k but i have made mistakes before, heck two weeks ago I bought NIO at $15 and it promptly dropped to $10 or $11.
So i dont want to buy any more tesla just on grounds of prudence and sleeping at night.
When it gets added to the S&P500 which should be soon, I think its going to pop again. I probably now wont sell when it gets to $2.5k though (two years off I'd say ) as I'm already about to start burning down my Apple shares which are unfortunately unwrapped (completely dumb !!!!!! mistake on my part ) but its a nice FW problem to have.

Index funds won't want to buy it too early during early August when it isn't part of the index, as it will screw up their tracking prior to the company being added to the index in late September.  And other investors who have flexibility on when to buy, already know it is likely to be admitted to the index in September and so much of the buying/selling positioning will already have been done accordingly - apart from people who are happy to leave it to later, who'll continue to do that.

It's not a particularly large position  - I already closed a bit of it and have a guaranteed stop if the price were to get too bad

Do you have to pay US withholding tax if you buy and then sell Tesla shares in an ISA?

You can't avoid any US withholding tax that's due by using an ISA. The person paying the dividend income to your ISA would withhold tax on it because you are a foreign resident and companies are required withhold tax on US source income paid to foreign residents.

However, Tesla does not currently pay a dividend (it does not have any reserves of profit) and so nobody is going to be withholding tax on the dividends they send to your ISA, because they are not sending any dividends to your ISA.

There is no US withholding tax on simply owning a share and then selling it, as the company is not giving you any flow of income that they could withhold from. The sale for cash is simply you arranging to transfer your ownership of the share to a third party and them paying you the market rate when they receive it.  The US does not tax capital gains on US stocks when they are made by non-US residents who aren't US citizens.

if the bottle neck is the battery companies, would it be prudent to invest in them alongside/ instead of the end users for them?
