Thanks for the information @DianneB - same surname and address here - so I hope that it might therefore work if such measures are indeed in place. I'm not trying to shop with Sainsbury's as we don't have one close enough, but I have accounts with both Asda and Tesco, so hope they might follow suit too.
We've decided to hold fire for a day or two (we're only actually out of fresh fruit for now, but getting low on fridge stuff) and see what more it says in the letter. And once having it, if on-line shopping still isn't an issue, it might allow me to access a 'carers' session at the supermarket - they don't specify if or how they're policing that.
ETA: I've just seen that the patient is an 8 year old - bless, I hope they're keeping safe and well.5 -
And now, to top it all, I have just had a blazing row with my windowcleaner - from a safe distance. The estate where I live is all bungalows so has a lot of elderly people (it's often called God's waiting room!) but the windowcleaner said because he is outside he doesn't have to stop work. Bur many of the elderly people are going out and having a chat with him and getting quite close as many are hard of hearing, plus obviously paying cash. I told him he was not to clean my windows as although I am not in an "at risk group" I still don't want any more contact than is vital - which I don't consider clean windows to be. I appreciate he is self-employed so probably has financial concerns but it still seems there is a lot of confusion about who should stop work.7

The window cleaner in the next village to us was arrested this morning when seen by the police and told it was not an essential service.£71.93/ £180.0010

Just after I posted earlier, I spotted that Asda had a whole raft of new slots available, so I logged in and they disappeared, but there were some click and collect spaces, so I bagged one and created a shop. I've now spent something like 2 and a half hours just trying to pay and check out - payment has been authorised several times (but isn't appearing as a pending in my bank account, so I don't think it's been processed by Asda). The hold on my slot will be lost in a few minutes, so I won't get my order done. I just hope they haven't actually taken any payments.
I fully grasp that it's an extremely unusual and very busy time, but if the resources prioritised on completing payments in progress, I would have left the site and allowed capacity to be used by other shoppers. I'm going to have to brave an actual shop at this rate.8 -

Have people looked on FB community pages to see what smaller places are offering home delivery?
Over here in NI we have a lot of Spars, Supervalues and Centras which serve the local communities, even in our town they are as busy, if not more so then Tesco, we like to use them as they are owned by local people. And they have stepped up to the plate marvellously.
Only X amount of shoppers in store at a time. Gloves issued to you on the way in, hand gel the works. If you cant get in if you are self isolating then they deliver FOC. If you can get in and don't want to hang around, its order and collect on arrival. Floor markings at the deli counter, meat counter etc. Bit weird having to shout your order over to the server but you get used to it. They put your order on the counter and stand back, then you can move forward to pick it up.
The big stores should take note, I know I won't be inside any of the big stores again whilst this is going on
Also places like where I work, veg production for the hotels and restaurants, have now moved over to free delivery to the door. Order and pay either via pay pal or card or in cash, correct money in an envelope COD. Driver puts parcel on the doorstep and knocks and leaves if you have pre paid, else he steps back the safe distance and waits whilst you take in your delivery and leave the envelope on the door step. Absolutely no physical contact , our drivers have families to protect as well as the public. Some of the butchers and bakeries are doing the same9 -
Boo , does it usually show up so quickly on your statement? My Morrison's shop doesn't 🤔"You can't stop the waves, but you can learn to surf"

@suki1964 - that sounds really sensible and well worth supporting. I was telling my husband earlier about one I'd seen like that on TV where orders were being co-ordinated through a care agency with local offices and delivered by volunteers. Unfortunately, we've nothing like that locally, or I'd be happy to support them. I don't somehow think there are going to be many such kind-hearted volunteers where we live. We'd already discussed that we'd be happy to do such tasks ourselves, if my husband wasn't in such danger from the virus.
I lost my click and collect slot and was offered the opportunity to choose another - and ended up with the same time slot. So I'll try again later when it might be quieter.5 -

The shop isn't showing as an order and it refreshed the page to tell me that I'd lost my booked slot, so there's nothing to indicate it actually went through. I tried ringing, but they're only taking calls about orders due for delivery today or tomorrow, so I struck out there too.5 -
Volunteers out in full force today – coordinating with local doctors surgeries. They are bloody efficient at prescriptions! A few pms confirming my details and the next thing, I had a message back telling me that a named volunteer was standing in the queue at the pharmacy. It was delivered before lunch - and included 24 paracetamol!6
