Staying sane during self isolation (not medical chat - there are enough of those threads already)

Hi all
What are you doing to stay sane during self isolation?
Any good box sets / movies you are watching?  (I have Netflix)
I watched two fantastic motives on Netflix this week.  Both about painters:-
At Eternities Gate - about Van Gough - It is a brilliant portrayal of Van Goughs life, really moving - with William Dafoe (I think his name is) - and raises questions about Vincents life and death, that we shall, perhaps, never know the answers to
and
Mrs Lowry and Son - about Lowrys life and how he lived alone with his mother, who was SUPER critical of his work. A real eye opener

If anyone has any reccomendations, I would love to hear them

You could try Pinterest and see what's on it about topics that particularly interest you and make some Pinterest boards of your own for that.

I've certainly got ones for "my" topics and saved lots of articles/YouTube videos etc on them a few months back just-in-case.

Have you got any half finished projects?  For example, embroidery, knitting, organising photos etc?  These are what I call my "break a leg jobs".  I actually had my hip replaced June of last year and had all these jobs lined up - did I do any of them?  Of course I didn't.

Going for a walk, or a bike ride is not against the point of 'Self Isolation' - being in close proximity to other people, particularly lots of other people is - but a nice walk or ride in the countryside on your own will boost your immune system, increase your Vit D levels (Which will boost your immune system), and generally make you feel better - (which will boost your immune system!!!)

So get outside - just avoid being within a meter or two of others.

(This is assuming you're not actually feeling poorly)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

My age male 72, I have a few health problems, so being I live alone I am finding it difficult to get my head around totally isolating myself.
Although I have 2 grown-up children who I am sure will do the shopping for me. I do enjoy going to my local club for a few pints and a few games of snooker with my friends twice a week. At the moment there are only 25 cases in Wales 8 in my area, so the question is can I postpone going into isolation for a while, I am doing all the suggested hygiene practises and I am thinking of doing any shopping I need at 8 am so hopefully there won't be very many in the store.

I'm mostly housebound so the only real thing for me will be if any of us do definitely get it and have to isolate within the house. Things I do when I'm feeling well enough include lacemaking (crochet is becoming popular and requires fewer supplies), jigsaw puzzles, listening to radio comedies - Cabin Pressure and John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme in particular - listening to music, studying, watching sci-fi, etc. All the classic Star Trek (TOS-ENT) is on Netflix [along with Discovery but that was far too 'adult' for my tastes].

BBC iPlayer has back catalogues of programmes such as Death in Paradise, Call the Midwife; I'm not sure if Sherlock is there or on Netflix at the moment. I have digital or DVD copies of most of my favourite films so I don't tend to notice what's available outside of series I'm already watching.

For people who are otherwise well, the possibilities really are endless. Baking, arts/crafts, exercising, gardening, all those odd jobs that never get done, selling on eBay ... And there is a wealth of learning that can be done online, Wikipedia is rather reliable now and you can always check the sources; there's also Khan Academy which is a bit more academic but totally free.
  • Catch up on diy projects. If you have the items in the house you can finish painting.

A good declutter of all wardrobes.

    Sort out the ironing basket

Keep fit with Pilates and yoga video on YouTube

Try new recipes from the internet. Use up lentils and dried goods.

Read a few books from on line library

    Learn to meditate

    Listen to Spotify

    Catch up on a boxset

Trace your ancestry on line, should keep you busy for a few weeks. Some of the sites offer a 14day free trial.
  • Great idea for a thread.....I will be joining in.  I've already bought paint, upholstery supplies, and diy materials, books etc. I will be doing a massive declutter and spring clean, gardening etc.

Im also going to sort through all my paperwork, organise my photos and finish my memoirs. 😂.
