I'm looking for some advice about ebay's new managed payments system. I am a private seller, not a business.
If I sign up for ebay's managed payment system and a buyer pays by paypal will I be charged fees by both paypal and ebay?
I've seen quite a few complaints about the payment system on MSE forum. Have things improved? Are there people out there ( particularly private sellers) who it is working well for?
Also there's talk of people being given deadlines to sign up for managed payments or having their accounts frozen. I don't think I've had an email about it (although it is possible I deleted it thinking it was some kind of scam email). Everytime I go into myebay now there is a message across the top saying I need to update my details for managed payments. How long do you get to before they freeze your account? Am I best off signing up now, or waiting until they force me to? Thanks

I have merged your post with the main thread for clarity.

Firstly though sellers only get one FVF, so it doesn’t matter what buyer uses to pay you get charged the same percentage on the amount taken.

You will get a warning when you must register and if you ignore that deadline then you won’t be able to list anything further . You can sign up as soon as they request it but you won’t get switched until they tell you it is your turn.

You don't pay both PayPal and eBay fees when you're on managed payments, only eBay but the amount you pay to eBay will increase. eBay do have a list somewhere of what you can expect to pay once you've been moved over to managed payments.

The only time PayPal will get involved is if the buyer pays via PP, there's an issue and they've exhausted eBay's methods of resolving it but even that will go through eBay as a payment dispute.

The payment you will receive into your bank account will be the sale price less all of the fees, so you don't end up with an invoice to pay for FVFs at the end of the month.

I don't have any issues with managed payments apart from the fact that it can take a few days to receive the money into your bank account.

I do like the fact that when you refund via managed payments then the only part that eBay retain is the fixed transaction part, unlike PP who may retain both the variable and fixed parts of the fee for selling an item.

They way in which eBay "present" the managed payments can be slightly confusing until you get your head around it as well.

As for your other questions, I don't really have the answers for you. I think that we were asked to give eBay the necessary information for managed payment a few weeks before we were transferred over so I don't think it matters when you give eBay the information. It might be important that  the bank account name matches the eBay account holder's name as I think I've read of a few issues around that.

Yes it is genuine, if you look at the bottom it will have your name and ebay account name. Log in safely and there is possibly a banner on the selling page.

Interestingly the system for sign up of managed payments has changed. My business account was switched last year, I got the 'update your details' email which I complied with and didn't actually get switched until about 6 weeks later.

Last night I got the email to update on a lightly used private account which I did straight away, and this morning I am switched across already. I actually have 2 items finishing tonight with bids, and they both now show I will be paid via managed payments.

Yes when I switched it took me by surprise, the items with bids were paid by PayPal and the ones that were already listed but got bids after I switched were paid by MP.

We updated DH's account for managed payments this morning and he was switched over immediately. My account was also switched over immediately (I added my details a few weeks ago). "Immediately" being a moment after hitting the "submit" button.

The business account seemed to take ages between adding the bank details and being switched over but that was last August. Seems that eBay have improved the process.

My more commonly used private account has just been asked to update by 31st May, I decided to just go ahead and update and apparently 'whoosh' just like that I am on managed payments.

That's all the accounts that I routinely use to sell switched across now.

I have had 5 private accounts with the 'invite' now. I have switched 3 but will leave the other 2 as they are only used for buying. All mine were update by 31st May so looks like the big roll out is underway. Let's see if there are any FVF offers for the weekend now.
