The Newbury Building Society Home Saver may be of interest.  Despite it's name it is effectively a Regular Savings Account, and there is nothing in the T&Cs that I can see that means you must save towards a house or not be a home owner (this might not used to have been the case - I think the account used to have some tie to/benefit from a Newbury mortgage)

The account allows monthly maximum deposits up to £500, with a maximum account balance of £20,000 (incl interest).  Interest rate a little lower than other RS at 0.75%, but some might see this as offset by the large onthly deposite and high maximum balance.  To note - the account automatically converts to another product if it exceeds the maximum balance.

It is open to existing members (in the UK) and new members within its wide South England catchment area.

I have umpteen RS`s whose interest payments when added together for a year will take me near the £1000 Personal Savings Allowance.

Similar story here too, @where_are_we.  Looks like we are both assiduous players of the same game.

  • Thank you for the reply.  I may give it a go & see what happens. 😎

Darlington BS:  Would you be so kind as to let us know in due course?  It's potentially a great find as, if you're successful, you could have up to three of those RS accounts.  In theory it should work fine, and over the years I've done much the same with  some other building societies.
Yes of course. It may take a couple of weeks as their EA account can only be opened by post or in a branch (which isn’t possible for me).

  • Thanks @JamesRobinson48 I had not realised that Newbury had reduced their coverage area. I created a map a few years ago of the coverage area, and have just updated it.  Orange is current area; Blue is the older area (correct in Dec 2018)

My letter has an account number below my name but it will not show online until I sign the Online Signatory Form and return in the second class envelope. Too late for today’s post. So probably 3rd September earliest it will show online

I've had the letter today too, posted SCP 27/8, received 28/8, which isn't bad going!

I've taken a chance. They had the signature form last year about this time, so why they need another, only they know. I've FP'd £300 today from a Club Lloyds account; showing as debited 31/8. I've posted the signature form in the SCP envelope provided in a post-box at the PO labelled - NHS Sat & Sun.

It could all come together and I could deposit again on Sept 1st.

    Or not.
    And it ... didn't?

    1. In spite of never having sent them a pass-sheet for my nominated current account, nor this time a cancelled cheque or a paying-in slip, I had the proceeds of the old RS in my account on 31/8, though in the evening.

    2. My £300 FP was reversed, with an explanation. The acknowledgement letter for the signature form arrived today (SCP dated 1/9!). The account is only showing as pending at the moment but I've FP'd the £300 today. I'll check tomorrow.
  • I think it shows as pending until a deposit is made into account.

It's a strange system, combined as it is with requiring evidence of the bank account even though it is now four times that I have unloaded RS proceeds to the same account. And the signature form even though they have had more than one before. The latter is just part two of the application and seems a bit of a throw-back to older times - unlike for example Skipton who simply accept that they know you and accept a normal no-strings application.
They really need to adapt to more modern and relevant systems.
Not that I'm too bothered about that if they keep offering 1.52%.

I agree - I've opened the Easy Saver and the Member Bond, each time reams of paper arrives with a set of at least three leaflets.
