Re: Progressive SO issue
I'm guessing its a Lloyds to Progressive oddity, I tried again putting Progressive Building Society and the account number and sort code supplied and Lloyds confirmed the account details as Progressive, however on the 2nd setup screen once again insisting I needed to change the payee to my own name not the Building Society name, so I thought I'd see what happened if I did that. I put my 11 digit account number in the reference field and my name as payee and on the 2nd check it confirmed this was a match. Not what I was expecting but hopefully now setup. I'll only know for sure at the beginning of August!1 -

Not a top rate but could be one to open speculatively:
Skipton have launched a Home Deposit Saver Issue 1 at 5.06% (variable).
Account lasts 24 months
£500/mth max up to a max balance of £12k
Can skip months if necessary
No withdrawals allowed but account can be closed without penalty if necessary
ETA:
Unused subscriptions can be rolled over and caught up in future months (e.g. you could open with £1, then top up the balance to £6k in month 12)
Also of note is that the account term starts from the date of your first deposit, not from the day you apply.15 -

In addition to not requiring a payment every month, unused monthly allowances can be rolled over without limit, so you could (for example) deposit £6,000 (less initial deposit) in month 12 if the rate were to become attractive. As noted, you can escape without penalty at any point by closing the account.
