That's normal in Scandi houses! My daughter-in-law is Norweigan and thinks it's weird that British people have washing machines in kitchens.

Her mother visited us recently and was disappointed that we don't have carpet in the bathroom as she was desperate to see a carpeted bathroom

Although I find it bizarre that a house on sale at £575k doesn't have an outside tap

Switzerland has nuclear bunkers for 10million people (population 8.5m) 

100,000+ in private homes and lots of communal ones.

Depending what you read, all homes do/don't need a bunker. I think it's only still mandatory for blocks of 40+ residents and the requirement for Herr and Frau Eidelwiess* to constantly maintain their personal bunker is being dropped.

Think it was a popular thing in the 60s all over Europe

I've seen that quite often. There will be a reason. I sometimes wonder if it was pre-double glazing improving the insulation of the house. Or: dungeons.

Between 1696 and 1851, one had to pay a tax on the number of windows. Some claim that this lead to windows being bricked up to avoid the tax. Others suggest that it was an architectural thing. Take your pick.

I've also heard that bricked up windows, which apparently gave rise to the expression 'daylight robbery', were a form of 'future proofing'.  Glass was prohibitively expensive in the early days, so much so that commissioners of many newly built houses could afford everything but the requisite number of windows.  As a result, houses were finished with empty window apertures on the proviso that the buyer would glaze them when he (inevitably) had the financial wherewithal - presumably it was thought easier to build the lintels and so on at the time the building went up, rather than constructing blank walls with the intention to one day knock through.  Said apertures needed to be weatherproof, so were bricked up.

One also might have suspicions that those with anachronistic tastes had bricked-up windows added to their houses for period flavour long after industry began producing cheap glass.
