Currys & Coverplan by Mastercare

I had to go to 3 PC worlds (currys) to get a PC because they were persisting trying to sell me insurance. I told them no and one guy even talked himself out of a sale!! What a prat. I ended up in my 3rd store and explained my experiance with them and the sales guy gave me 3 years insurance for free on the monitor. That was a good result but painful to get there. But extended warranties are not worth it and you should refer to your consumer rights for warranty and life expectancy of equipment0

When i've bought big value electrical items from Curry's/Comet and been offered the 'extended warranty' i've politely told them that they've just been telling me how reliable 'x' is so i don't need the 'extra cover', and should 'x' let me down in that time then i won't buy that make next time around.
Luckily i've not had anything give up within those first few years, but that might have something to do with our stuff being in storage for the last 4 years whilst we're in the Middle East0 -
Take the Which advice and self insure. Find out how much the 'extended warranty' would cost and put that amount into a savings account (or cash ISA!). You will soon amass a nice tidy sum plus interest. If your machine breaks down in the first year, you are covered anyway. After that, you may have free extended cover from store or credit card but the machine is not likely to breakdown if it has lasted a year (despite stories of stuff failing one day after the warranty expires). Also, most manufacturers will claim their machines are built to last 5 years (say) and if they break down within that time, you may still be able to get a repair via the seller under the sale of goods act.
When your machine does finally develop a problem, check out your local appliance repair man instead of the manufacturers hotline. He will usually come out sooner and fix it quicker and be cheaper. You have got that nice pot of cash to pay him with. If it can't be fixed economically, you have a nice pot of cash from which to buy a new one. If it doesn't break down, you still have the cash!
Interesting thread over on grumbletext. It's a bit long and you have to read it backwards but you get the idea about coverplan (etc.).

I take cover on things like my mobile phone (actually an insurance policy not an extended warranty), laptop and digital camera. I use them a lot - outdoors and they get moved around a lot as well. This is only because of the accidental damage cover. I wouldn't bother on a washing machine etc as they rarely go wrong.
ps I've had a new laptop, new digital camera and at least 5 new mobile phones.
It's amazing what gets damaged just as it is getting old and is no longer available0 -
I would also reccommend insuring the item as well as it likely to be cheaper and less likely to mess you around.0

I was going to buy the extended guarantee from Curry's for my fridge/freezer.. Hubby advised against it..Good thing too, it seems."I did then, what I knew then. And when I knew better, I did better"0

hello.
we bought our old xbox back in 2002 december. for about £280.00 cover plan cost £49.99 for 3 yrs. from dixons. anyway the extended warranty runs out on dec 2006 this year.
the xbox broke a couple of weeks ago. they are sending us vouchers out for about £290.00 but we have not received them as yet they were processed on the 26th april this year 2006.
ive phoned them up numerous times to see where they are.
they said they should be here by now.
they are sending a letter out for me to sign and say ive not received them yet.
we are supposed to be going to chester tommorow to spend them.
has anyone had trouble like this with dixons vouchers before.
does anyone know how long they usually take to arrive after they have processed your claim.
see you

hubby didnt get the tv as the firm we were renting off let us buy the one we were renting for only £70 - very good deal as brill tv but, we wanted to save rental money....
the laptop's insurance proved good as the laptop broke and had to be mended - it was still under manufacturers guarantee at the time but it was a key which snapped off and they were arguing that this doesnt just happen so if i hadnt've had the other insurance i wouldntve got it mended....
my washer gave up the ghost a week after the coverplan ran out - aaarghghg, didnt bother renewing after reading this post lol - lost out on a lot of cash there - am now renting at £2 a week (family prices).......
my monitor on the computer i have insured broke and i got a new one - they have sent a totally unknown brand 'videoseven' and said it was one of the latest models - i wasnt happy and asked them why i couldnt have a packard bell like my old one, they said it was like for like and not model for model - so, if it does the job of the old one any make will do - be warned!!! you could be given alba for sony, etc.....also, i didnt read the small print right and it also says 'reconditioned' models may also be given - luckily mine is brand new and has proven a lot better than my old p.bell........well worth the insurance there as i couldntve bought a new one...
my printer broke and i immediately bought a new one - silly me forgot to check if it was still covered on the coverplan, but, weeks later found out it was - that was a waste too...0 -
If you do want to take coverplan then dont pay monthly you will be paying well over the odds and will get it alot cheaper buying in one go, i always buy a coverplan and haggle for a discount i got £40 off my recent cooker , got home and then cancelled the coverplan0
