Yes , I agree that one post should deal with residential parking , landlords almos managing agents , letting agents , the landlord act , tenancies etc , even if it's post #9

That's why the suggestion of a NEWBIES FAQ 2020 is a good idea. :) A new FAQ thread would probably be easier to create than trying to "hack and slash" the existing one.

Plus with the forum changing it's probably a good idea (as already suggested) to take an offline backup of the NEWBIES FAQ ... cut-n-paste into Word may well retain all the links.

    Yes. I agree

When reading the sticky this morning I did think that I wouldn't start from here

However, it is Coupon_Mad doing all the hard yards and it would be up to her how she felt about that. I guess a few of the regulars could take a topic each and provide a first draft? Just a thought.

    :T

Trouble is, I can't possibly write a 'new' NEWBIES thread this weekend just before the forum view changes (and it might not be to my liking!!) but am happy to consider that later this year once we are all used to the forum changes.

And you know some newbies say they want a flow chart and I always say it would be too big and I hate flowcharts because they are (to my mind) childish spoon-feeding and 'flowcharts' are corporate nonsense used by trainers to stop people falling asleep?

If anyone doesn't hate flowcharts and wants to make one, I am happy to link it.

My sense is that a flowchart would be too complicated for this subject to be honest

If you look at redx's suggested nine topics I'd have thought it not too difficult if one regular took one each. That would share the workload and it is much easier to work from a basic draft than from scratch.

I am happy to volunteer to do one on private estates, if that helps.

    Anyone else?

ETA. Thought about this while at the gym this morning

You could have a sort of a flowchart in the "running order" in the stickies

    Along the lines of

    1. Introduction
    2. Acronyms
    3. Private Estate tickets (to landowner appeal)
    4. Business tickets (to landowner appeal)
    5. The appeal process
    6. Dealing with debt chasers
    7. Going to court
    8. At court
    9. After court (including CCJs)
    10. Index of important threads

    Or something like that, anyway!

Yes please, then I can copy it into a post, or link it to avoid a wall of words.

    Okay

I am caught up early next week but will have a go towards the latter end

I'll put a draft up for critique

That running order or similar is what I was getting at

Most of it is already done in the current newbies thread but less posts

So my thought was that she starts a new Newbies thread (say in the middle of the night , lol) , adds say 10 or 12 posts straightaway , copies and pastes from the current thread into each new post to divide it up into topics as per above ( not start from scratch )

Any additions like the new topic can be copied and pasted into the appropriate post

Crabman could add his warning to a new last post , copying and pasting from the old one , then sticky the new one, unstick the old one and merge it into the archive thread for posterity

I repeat , most of the work exists in the old one already

Flowcharts have been tried before , too complicated at the moment

If and when the Mhclg get the new CoP finalised , if it's simpler then maybe do one

The good thing about each topic having its own post is that we can refer people to it easily, because they miss stuff like hire cars at the moment because it's buried at the bottom of post #1

The biggest benefit would be to LOCK the thread after each edit (you would probably have to get access to a friendly board guide (is there any other type) to facilitate this) as that would stop the people who cannot read posting on a thread that says DO NOT POST ON HERE! and moving it up or down the thread list. This doesn't help when one is trying to point NEWBIES to the sticky by saying "it is on the front page third thread down" when often it has moved.

It is normally locked by crabman (or Soolin) to stop that problem from happening , it's only open at the moment whilst it's being edited and worked on

I have asked crabman to tidy it up several times over the years and I asked Soolin to do so last week , it's now been done

But yes , once complete , the sticky thread should be locked and only opened temporarily when changes need doing

It's a shame that it has to be opened just to be edited by CM before being relocked

The board guides are happy to do it however
