Post office van drove into my brand new home

  • OP...can I ask what you want from royal mail in respect of this?

Your physical damage has been corrected as a gesture of goodwill by the house builder and I appreciate that that leave royal mail with little obligation to rectify the issue simply because the developer did.

I understand that you are frustrated by little response from RM but realistically what do you actually want from them.

I know how annoying it is to have someone damage something that has been worked hard for and saved up for...someone keyed my brand new car 3 days after I got it...I have no redress other than to get it fixed.
Its very annoying but as others have said very little you can do.

Bizarrely ive also had RM reverse into a set of metal gates and wall around my property, perhaps on that occasion I was lucky as the driver did put a note through the door.

Perhaps if you feel you want emotional compensation you will need to set out exactly what you realistically want from RM...They are not mind readers, they have no idea of what to suggest to you unless you set out clearly your expectation.
In the scheme of things for them it was just another knock on a busy day for them.
The days of companies offering payouts as good will gestures are few and far between now.however if you truly feel you need something make that request clear to them and see if they oblige.

Thank you for all your advice.

I'm new to this forum and appreciate your help.

Something small, funny and insignificant to yourself (such as small damage) can be much more significant to someone else.
I spent many years saving for my house deposit and I cant help to feel upset that someone drove into my hosue and then simply drove off without any due care. Yes I know that's life but I feel like it's easy to laugh at this happening to me but would you be laughing if this happened to you? I would not laugh if this happened to my neighbour. I'm very new to home ownership and was simply asking for advice.

    Thanks again!

If you are so upset about such a minor incident then you wouldn't have bought the house if you had seen the damage that will have been caused to it while it was being built :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Accidents happen. Move on. If you look closely not every brick in your new house will be perfect, there will be damage on some.

Another tip. This is just the first of many things that will get damaged over the course of your home ownership. You have a lot to learn!!

Your drive is long enough for 3 cars yet the post office van drove down your drive into your house?

Why was the post office van driving down your drive? Why is your house near a curb if your drive is 3 cars long? I cannot picture your house layout at all

It sounds similar to our new build whereby the driveway, ours also takes three cars, is tucked around the back of the house and the house is set back from the edge of the footpath by just over 1m at the point by the driveway.

(Looking back at these pictures which were taken in April last year it is amazing just how much everything has matured in that time. The gardens all look much more filled out now!!)

Okay I can picture it a bit, I imagine those driveways could be easily used as turning spaces for people, especially as cul de sacs and turning areas soon turn into places for people to leave their cars leaving nowhere to turn for anyone else on these narrow roads.

In our particular case that isn't a problem as it is a very short road with t junctions either end so no need to turn in the road. But I agree that could quite easily happen on a no through road or cul de sac.

OP, I'm sure it was an unpleasant experience but honestly, there will come a time when you look back and laugh. At least it makes a good story. I hope you'll see the funny side of it soon. No real damage done and hopefully you'll have years of incident-free happiness in your new home.

On the 3rd May 1941, the Luftwaffe launched a major blitz on the city of Liverpool. One of their pipe cluster bombs dropped prematurely in my village, adjacent to my house. The true extent of the damage came to light when we had some work done in 2014 - it cost me £15k to fix. I'd quite like them to repay me and apologise too.

Thankfully, I'm not holding my breath. Welcome to the joys - and responsibility - of home ownership.

You should go straight to the top and ask for a personal apology and compensation from Angela Merkel and a written confirmation it won't happen again.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

The whole point about gestures of goodwill is that you're not legally entitled to them.

And you said you've had an apology - why was this not "real"?

    I disagree
A company may well not be clear if a very noisy customer is entitled to the compo or not and rather than let a court sort it may pragmatically pay out as as a gesture of goodwill" even though it thinks the customer is legally entitled.
This stops a precedent being established
My understanding is that a large airline are very fond of doing this
