Parent has a key to my house so she can pick up the dog when I'm working. We've had a few issues because she is doing me a huge favour but I still don't want her just waltzing in when I'm at home.
After a conversation about how awkward it would be if she let herself in and I was shagging on the settee, the penny finally dropped. She still calls round on spec but does knock, and is happy to be sent away if it's not convenient.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

:rotfl: Or, indeed, how awkward it would be if she let herself in and Gitdog was shagging on the settee ...

No way could I cope with anyone - no matter how close - just turning up on the doorstep. It absolutely HAS to be by prior arrangement.

I am in poor health, and there are days - yesterday and today being a case in point - where I am not even well enough to get dressed; I also have a severe anxiety disorder, so visitors turning up out of the blue would be simply too stressful to tolerate. Plus, if I'm going to cope with a visitor, I need to be properly rested beforehand, so at least 24 hours notice, please.

A trusted friend has our spare key; but he wouldn't dream of coming over here and just letting himself in, he'd always wait to be invited, and would knock like any other visitor. He has the key because the dog-boarding service I work for requires that there is an additional keyholder; also he pops over and picks up the post and generally checks all is well when we go on holiday.
If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)
