I wouldn't be counting on Starling still being fee free in 3 years time when the Barclaycard travel deal expires. The (small) problem with Barclaycard is that it's Visa, so it's a very good card but, generally, not quite the best for spending. I'll probably just stick with both my Barclaycards for now (travel card and 0.5% cashback card) and review the travel in 3 years. I very much doubt the cashback card will be around beyond the end of this year, as it pays more cashback than they are allowed to charge retailers.

I agree, I use Barclay card as back up but it is good for money withdrawals abroad, none of this only 200 pounds a month cash problem you have with revolut.

Mastercard wise Is the best, sadly I cancelled my Halifax some time ago as I wasn't using it as Tandem had replaced it

Least starling and revolut are mastercard, but Starling only allows £300 max a day for cash

  • I was able to withdraw 600 Euros a day back in September 2019...
  • I opened my nice new Tandem Credit Card account on the 7th November. I have absolutely loved it. The app is great and I have also been using the auto save option too to have it linked to saving small change.

Brilliant!.... or so I thought until I received the email today about the £5.99 month charge that will be introduced on the 9th March 2020.

Since getting the card, I have spent almost everything on it but if I continue with it from 9th March, I will not see any benefit of the cashback facility as it will just be wiped out by the monthly fee. As I pay off the balance in full every month, I am not happy at not seeing any kind of cashback reward.

I already have the Halifax Clarity Credit Card for overseas spending as this is definitely still the top card for overseas spending. I am loathe to go back to Amex as I was limited with the places I was able to use it and although it was good cashback, it didn't allow me to put everything on there.

Goodbye Tandem, it looks like I will be reverting back to use my Amazon Credit Card for daily spending.

Crappy customer service's & no department knows what the other's doing. I've not used my card for a few months as their app does not tally with their statements. They can shove their new fees, no loss on my part.
No one said it was gonna be easy!
  • Hi All,

New to the forum but wanted to add that I too have received the email about my Tandem card and like the majority will be ending my agreement with them as it’s not worth £5.99 per month. Be interesting to see what happens with the Tandem card as I would imagine they will lose a significant amount of customers due to these changes.

Whilst it’s not quite as good as Tandem, I’ve just applied for a Barclaycard Rewards card which has 0.25% cash back and fee free spending abroad. Obviously it’s a Visa card so the exchange rates are not quite as good as the MasterCard rate but it’s much more widely accepted than Amex so a reasonable all rounder.

Hope everyone else can find a suitable replacement for Tandem.

Been with them since Sept 2018

Latest statement shows cashback of £177, so using that I guess it would be worth it

That said some expenditure on there unlikely to be repeated, so likely to be about break even

Like the app, and the notifications, but didn't appreciate the move to PDF statements at first and nearly missed the payment

Probably go back to Barclaycard cashback card would be my initial thoughts
  • Am another who wont be taking up their offer. I've never used it enough despite the cash back.
Have a small amount on it from christmas, which will be paid off when the DD goes out. Card has been cut up, so wont be using again.

Call me a cynic but has this been the plan all along? Is this why we couldn't have 2 cards on one account? It's a right pain and now £11.98 a month.
For us it's only a back up when Amex isn't accepted and for use abroad. Cashback is nice but the amount we use ours vs £5.99 each means it's a no from us. We'll each need close to £20k to save the difference between our instant access Nationwide account and their 1.5%. Just not worth it.

It's not as if there aren't other cards which do similar jobs. Halifax, Nationwide, Barclaycard, Aqua, Revolut, Starling.

Back to the drawing board for me

This was my first reaction, but then I considered the other benefits and it seems quite interesting at face value to be honest.

    - Current account at 1.5% AER is pretty good - only Santander and a few others match this as far as I can tell, and they are limited in one way or another. This seems like unlimited at 1.5%?! (it doesn't say unlimited anywhere, but I can't see a limit either - perhaps worth it to confirm)

    - 0% interest on purchases is likewise quite tempting. In effect that means an additional 1.5% cashback if you turn all your credit into savings and pay it off slowly enough

There might be downsides that I'm not seeing, but it seems quite good even with the £6 monthly fee.

Just read the T&C for the tandem savings account, it states a max limit of £250,000. So I assume 1.5% AER of this? Though only first £85,000 is protected. Might be a better alternative for those wanting to save more than 20k than Santanders limit.

Glad I read this thread as I clearly didn't study the email well enough. I thought it was offering the chance to change to this £5.99 per month membership deal. I didn't realise the fee free cashback card was going to be scrapped. Glad that I didn't cancel my co-op bank members reward credit card now. Have had a good chunk of cashback from Tandem (about £6.50ish per month) but I'm not interested in anything where I have to pay a monthly fee. What a shame.
