Make do, Mend and Minimise in 2020

At work, they celebrate all birthdays of the month in one go. The celebrants can either supply their own cake, or give some money to one of the colleagues who will then bake a cake. Of the 70 colleagues in the building, about twenty usually show up. I baked a chocolate cake with cream and marmalade (a foolproof Good Housekeeping recipe
) and 12 ginger cupcakes, and they went down a treat!

I'm persuading my dds (8 and 11) to actually finish some bath products they have. They make them last as long as possible (which is fine), and then do not use up the very last bit, so the almost empty bottles stay on the bathroom windowsill forever. There are new bottles in my stock in the loo under the stairs, but I refuse to put these in the bathroom until they have finished their old bottles. It's minimizing my costs for now, because they use the very generic shower gel and shampoo I put out for general use, rather than the fancy girls' stuff they got for St NicolasAre you wombling, too, in '22? € 58,96 = £ 52.09Wombling in Restrictive Times (2021) € 2.138,82 = £ 1,813.15Wombabeluba 2020! € 453,22 = £ 403.842019's wi-wa-wombles € 2.244,20 = £ 1,909.46Wombling to wealth 2018 € 972,97 = £ 879.54Still a womble 2017 #25 € 7.116,68 = £ 6,309.50Wombling Free 2016 #2 € 3.484,31 = £ 3,104.594

Make do mend and minimise
Using up food from my cupboards and freezers, really pleased this month as still under my £60.00 food budget for the month. I was expecting to have to perhaps pick up a few bits on Tuesday ,but decided that I would use up more stuff first. I have enough salad stuff and fresh fruit to use today, so tomorrow being the last day of the month I will get my odds and ends tomorrow. Some of the bits were a case of Hmm what was that I frozebut once defrosted it was edible so it got eaten.
Started back knitting again, although not as much as I did, but I do about an hour at a time then rest for an hourStill awaiting the letter for physio to start
so I guess its minimising my wool stash a little .
Mended the door handle on my garden gate, ,well not so much mended it but turned the slot thing upside down so the latch drops onto the upside down bit instead of the broken bit.simply a case of undoing two screws and turning the bit upside down and rescrewing the unbroken bit where the broken bit used to be .If it lasts a bit longer it saves me buying a new one ,also put a couple of screws along under the bar so it won't drop down as a back up .
also put a new plug on a table lamp that I dug out of the spare room to have by my chair One of the to-do jobs on my to-do list that's now been-done
silly jobs sometimes get forgotten, but really only take a few minutes to sort out and are so satisfying

Our water heater had a 'debit detector' malfunction last night, just as I was filling the bath for dd2. The water only went lukewarm for about 5 minutes, and then was plain cold. The instruction manual said that with this particular faulty code it was necessary to call out an expert, so I was on the phone with the water heater company to make a claim (we have full insurance), when my husband walked in and said he had fixed it, by just unplugging and plugging it back in
He's an IT man
. It seems to be working well now, but I'll keep an eye on it and ask the expert to change the detector during the annual check-up (all covered under the insurance).

Bought various ys bakery goodies yesterday so got 2x potato scones, 2x butteries, 1x croissants, 2x muffins and 2x crumpets for £2.32
. Butteries for breakfast this morning and the rest are stashed in the freezer. Must not buy any more bakery goods for a while as I still have almond croissants and pain au chocolats in the freezer that I bought ys last week.
This evening I'm flying down to Bristol to see some friends for the weekend so going to download some magazines and books onto my tablet, this will hopefully minimise my costs in the airport. Hope everyone has a good weekendMortgage 26.4.25 - £108,500 1.9.25 - £105,664.31

I've mended a wool sock. I can't call it darning. It looks terrible but it's back in commission and being useful.7

Sourdough starter discard made it's way into pretzels today. I haven't made them before. I didn't know there was a thing such as pretzel salt. I used pink salt sprinkled as it's all I had but I suppose a larger grain should have been used.6
