Currently sitting here waiting for a gas engineer to turn up as our carbon monoxide monitor has gone off. I was cooking with the doors closed and our cooker is 40 years old so am assuming it's that. Hoping it's not the boiler! It didn't stay on long once I ventilated but I thought I'd better get it checked. It's not worth the risk."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". Eoin McGee6

Thank you everyone
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with antique appliances! You wouldn't find many modern appliances lasting so long, it's such a shame!
Really impressed with the service we got yesterday. I called the emergency gas number and they sent someone out within the hour. Checked both and determined it was most likely to be the oven. We were told not to use that, but it would be best to get the boiler checked too, though there was nothing obviously wrong. There was no charge for the call out which was a relief.
Today has been a nightmare. I had already booked the day off to have a day to myself. Instead I spent it phoning around trying to get someone to look at the boiler, and trying to look for a replacement oven (and fitter). Everyone is fully booked for the next couple of months, so no luck! If I order an oven I can get fitting with that, but that's another 2-3 weeks. Without fitting I could get the oven on Friday. I feel like I've completely wasted a day off and haven't achieved anything!
I've also been an anxious wreck as well. My initial response was naturally 'how on earth are we going to pay for this?' It's habit. This is exactly the situation I wanted the house fund for. I guess it will take a while for it to sink in and realise that the money is there (if I don't have to use it all up immediately!).
Everything in our house - electrics, plumbing, bathroom, kitchen, windows, carpets - it's all from the 60s and 70s. The boiler/heating is 10 years old and we put it in when we moved in. There have been the odd bits that have been replaced/repaired, but the rest is all original. That's why the house fund is so important to me, any of it could just 'go' at any time, and it's likely to be expensive when it does.
Luckily, to DH's disgust a couple of years ago, I asked for a microwave combi-oven for my birthday (he doesn't think appliances are presents, my thinking is if it's something I want then it's ok!). It can be used as an oven, grill and microwave. I asked for it for precisely this reason and it will be a lifesaver over the next few weeks until we can get sorted. I've got my slow cooker too, so it's just the hob I will miss. I might invest in a toaster as we got rid of ours a few years ago as I preferred to use the grill."Good financial planning is about not spending money on things that add no value to your life in order to have more money for the things that do". I have ordered a new cooker which should be here on Monday, and someone is going to get in touch with me next week about sorting an appointment. Hopefully it won't be too long.

A difficult situation without doubt but congratulations on getting the house fund together so you can respond. Hope you get sorted with the new cooker soon.If you have built castles in the air, your work should not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them
