  • Yesterday I'd heard nothing from BG regarding opening of the new account so I phoned and got through to a helpful guy who told me that my BG contract start date is 16th Jan. Up to this point I would be charged the Breeze rates. BG will be managing the production of billing between 22 Dec and 16th Jan taking into account any credit/debit residue from Breeze. I gave him my opening readings over the phone and he sent me a link to open the BG online account. Once I'd set this up it asked for the readings again so I've entered them. Then I received an e mail from BG asking for my opening readings....again!!

He also told me that I could switch immediately, so I've instigated this and received a mail this morning from the new supplier giving me a start date of 6th Feb. I guess the only thing now preventing a switch is BG. So I'll sit and wait and see if they mess it up.

I have just been speaking to BG on chat regarding the readings I input yesterday..it seems despite their system thanking me for my opening readings they did not have them, if you submitted readings online it might be a good idea to check they actually have them!

BG: It may not get uploaded in the sales order due to intermittent technical error`

BG: We're in the process of updating your meter details as per the national database. Once this is done, you can see the readings online`

You: how long does this take please

BG: This process can take up to 14 days from your supply start date`

I then asked about transferring to another company ...

You: you are saying I can start a transfer away from British Gas today?

BG: Yes. As the supply transfer process can take up to 2 and half week. SO your account will get set up completely

You: you are saying it can take over 2 weeks for a transfer to take place and by this time my account will be set up, so the other company can just take it over?

BG: when you ask the another supplier, they will contact us with your request. Then a transfer date set mutually, Then the details gets sent to National database. So this process take 2 and half week to get the transfer completed

Sorry its a bit long winded, I then asked:

You: thank you, just wanted to check it was OK to start a transfer today.
Also when will I be billed by BG? As I only became a customer from yesterday I am assuming from 22 Dec -15 Jan I will be paying the rates charged by Breeze energy and then from yesterday will pay BG rates?

    BG: That's correct

Decided against avro in the end. Switching to Yorkshire Energy (Green Yorkshire rate) which works out about £5 cheaper a month for us and fixes us to a longer fixed tariff (12 months with Avro on Simple and Supersave, Yorkshire Energy is until September 2021). Compared with Breeze this is a rise of around £3 per month for us (but the rate we were on with the V2 cannot remember the name was stupidly low, and in someway we slightly underpaid Breeze, so a few quid extra is about right).

Granted Yorkshire Energy have a £60 exit fee, but the difference per month will nicely equal that should we leave. And I doubt rates are going to go down significantly on new tariff in future somehow!

I don't mind exit fees so long as it does not end up costing me more down the line. I also am not comfortable with the first payment being 12 days after signing up, at least with Yorkshire Energy it is taken on the supply actually starts.

I suspect most of us in here will end up with Yorkshire Energy or Avro somehow. Both are really good deals on Elec and Gas.

That being said the BG rate is just nothing more than terrible.

Let us know your findings... atm it’s between avro and Yorkshire ... because there’s not a lot between them ... just waiting for the bg account set up confirmation then I’m off !!

It is close in cost terms, we are in Kent so could be slight regional differences in tariff potentially. I nearly did go Avro, but just decided between the two (and I do have a lot of Yorkshire family members might have been the final sway :rotfl:)

Either way I will enjoy keeping some case in my back pocket instead of BG.:T I don't mind paying for service or something of better quality but hey gas and electricity is the same product. And erm BG's service is shocking.

I agree, Breeze and Iresa who we were previously with could run rings round BG! I have just done another price check and are going to sign up to Avro this afternoon, 12 months fixed with no exit fees so should a miracle happen and something cheaper crops up within the 12 months I would consider it.

Good luck to us all (think we are going to need it) :T hopefully this time next month we will all have moved on and BG will be a distant memory :rotfl:
