Hi new here but desperate!
Got my gas energy bill recently and found that my gas usage had gone up massively from m
May so i had actually used more gas in the summer than winter.
So i started checking my meter over ,9 days i used 15m3 then in 2 days 42m3 !
My supplier says these figures are perfecly normal.
I also tried turning gas mains off for 17 hrs but it still went up 13m3 when i informed my supplier they dismissed it as 'not possible'
Anybody got any suggestions of what i can do to prove to my gas company i have a problem as they say the meter would be constantly faulty but i seem to have an intermittent fault as today it seems to be registering gas properly

Some modern digital E6 gas meters made by Eurometer, Landis & Gyr, Siemens have been known to go faulty.
What meter and which supplier?
If the meter reading increases with the gas valve off, then this obviously should not happen.
Cam you take a video showing the gas valve in the off position and the display incrementing?0 -
It doesnt do it all the time and at the moment its behaving normally. Its a libra 310p meter0

Hi Matthaus,
Your supplier may initially try to fob you off about the meter not being faulty because more often than not it won't be faulty when a customer complains about it being faulty.
However, meters CAN go faulty and digital gas meters are particularly prone to this from my experience.
The pattern of usage you describe initially gives a indication of the meter going faulty IF the figures you state are correct - for example, 42 metric units of usage recorded in 2 days in addition to the meter recording further usage when the whole supply was turned off. I'm not sure what size property you have but someone leaving the heating on full for 48 hours straight in a four bedroom property could not use on average 21 metric units per day.
I previously posted on this forum about someone else describing their gas usage and my gut feeling regarding that was that the meter was faulty - the poster confirmed at a later date after having it tested that it was faulty. You may wish to have a look at that previous post - this is the link https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5698157/huge-gas-bill
In your circumstances I cannot be as sure yet as I would need more information about the actual meter readings you took and the increase to the reading. Why not take a meter reading today and let us know the readings today, tomorrow and Monday - that might give some further clues. Continue to use the gas as you normally would (unless of course you discover you have a leak).
In reality, nobody on here can state for sure if your gas meter is faulty and the only way of knowing is for your supplier to test the gas meter.
You are entitled to request this - for gas meters the supplier will exchange the gas meter for you so you will have a new meter and your old meter will be tested. You will be charged for this meter exchange but if the meter accuracy test finds that your meter was faulty then you will be refunded the charge and your supplier should recalculate the bill. The test is completed by someone independent from your supplier and approved by Ofgem.
You should go with your gut feeling on the meter accuracy test. The charge for the meter accuracy test ranges signifcantly between the suppliers so its hard to tell you what it will be. You could find this out in the meantime and also in the meantime, if you take the actual readings like I said over the next three days and let us know the size of your property then we can give some further help on here?
Finally, I would also recommend dealing with this particular issue/query with your supplier via email instead of with the call centre agents.0 -
There is a letter b , dont know how long thats been there or if its significant?0

Fwiw, I agree with the supplier.Matthaus73 wrote: »As a new user im not allowed to add photo links apparently
No worries, for neither I nor anyone else here can actually help you.
Simply email the video to your supplier, EDF, and if it really proves the the supplier is wrong, I am sure they will send someone around to investigate.
Every day is a school day, even for energy suppliers0 -
Its a battery fault, If I were you, I would request an ofgem accuracy test. There is usually a charge if it comes back as being unfautly, But I would assume yours is from what you have said and what my 12 years in field has shown me.0
