  • Any advice as to what i should do before i let them take the meter ?
Anybody know how long they test a meter for as ? I need it tested over days rather than hours
15555 kwh used in past 7 days
Meter just gone up another 2m3 in 1 hour with mains off , videoed again ...my life is spent watching my meter

Well if the worst happens and they says it's OK, presumably you can insist on keeping the replacement (hopefully accurate) that they will have fitted. Although the testing charge would be unfair, at least it would be cost effective in the long run.

But with all your video evidence you would have a very good case for going to the Ombudsman for a refund of the test fee and all the overcharging.

Does anybody know whether you can just pay a lower amount to have a meter replaced without having the old one tested immediately? If, as expected, the consumption goes down significantly with the new meter that would be additional evidence that the old one is faulty, and then perhaps would be the best time to get it tested if they had agreed to 'park' it for a while.

In extremis (e.g. the likely overcharging is hundreds of pounds) you might even be able to find a Gas Safe registered person to fit a second meter downstream of the official-but-dodgy one. Probably not cheap, but potentially worth investigating, especially if they will remove the test meter after a month or two.
  • Latest video i have ...gas mains switched off and meter going up 2.5m3 in 1hr15mins will this be enough 'evidence' ?
Before EDF told me that that is just residual gas in the system ...suspicious of this as having checked old bills my average consumption over 12 months is around 1.5m3 per day
Hard to record for longer on a mobile phone (its only vga quality) and trying to cook for the kids after school before clubs ...cant wait for this nightmare to be sorted _pale_
  • The meter will be tested by a company called SGS. Once they receive it then it'll go in to quarantine for 28. If the reading advances at all during this time then it won't be tested at all and deemed to be too faulty to test.
  • Thanks stewie , is that 28 days or hours ? How long until i would get the results ?
    Many thanks
  • Oops sorry about that. It's 28 days.
  • Just an update on this.
Finally got EDF to come out on Saturday but the guy turned up expecting to test an electric meter ! Fortunately he was gas qualified as well and did a 'let by' test which was fine, he looked at my usage over the past 7 days (approx 180m3) and laughed saying it looked like a faulty meter which he would write up in his notes.
Unfortunately what he actually wrote according to EDF was 'customer thinks he has a faulty meter' so they are refusing to do anything more and told me to take it to the ombudsman if im not happy.
EDF claim i gave them a faulty April reading which is why my summer usage is high but my in home display unit shows i used more in summer than winter !
My total usage last year was approx 600m3 at EON
    Last 6 weeks its 400m3 !
C.A.B. cant do anymore than ask EDF to look into it so Ombudsman it is....unfortunately that seems a complicated process online.

I have 5 videos of around 90 mins showing gas usage going up between 2m3 and 6m3 with mains switched off but EDF say this proves nothing any gas engineers disagree ?
  • 1 other bit of info the meter failed on Sunday night and said valve failed to open. After pressing A and B a few times it started again and seems to be perfoming accurately now ?!?!

I have previously also found EDF to be very unhelpful and the only way to get anything resolved is to raise an official complaint see here https://www.edfenergy.com/for-home/help-support/making-complaint

Have you contacted the Complaint Resolution Team?

If necessary you can then go to the Ombudsman.

I suspect these energy suppliers are wondering why we don't trust them & even more why we don't trust their marvellous new smart meters. I suspect they are mostly illiterate, which doesn't actually surprise me that much. It could maybe just that they don't speak English which really wouldn't surprise me at all but would disappoint me.
Its nothing to do with the digital meter having a smart module built in, its because its a digital meter with an LCD screen, powered by a battery.
These meters have been known to do exactly the same thing ever since they were introduced., presumably because they are cheaper to make/buy . I think I saw my first E6 digital meter around 2007.. I have even seen them with their digits reversed to a mirror image. Digital displays on gas meters can t be trusted in the same way as an analogue display which can run for 25 years problem free
The G4 analogue meters ,last up to 25 years , super reliable, and don t need the battery changing every 6 to 10 years for credit meters and every 2 to 3 years for prepayment meters.
When the battery dies in digital credit meters, smart or dumb , the whole meter is changed for a new one..
G4 analogue meters were first trialed with a smart module built in , in my area around 2007 and business smart meters , which are much larger, still use the more reliable analogue meters with an additional smart module attached to the index.
