It's 99% likely that Barclays have loaded a CIFAS Cat 6 marker in which case you won't get any account with a high street bank.

Send the SAR off to CIFAS (it's free) and if it comes back with a marker forget any high street bank and your first choice should then be Monzo, followed by any prepaid cards such as Thinkmoney (but they often have fees with when account, while Monzo is free)

Also was your Barclays account closed instantly, or a 30/60 day closure?

Its been under review for 30 days, yesterday they told me they decided to close the account. I got 30 days to withdraw funds.
Also been told by Barclays that If they didn't mention in the letter that I got CIFAS marker put on my name then I should assume they didn't put it. Also why would they say in the letter that I should arrange new bank account with different bank, if they would put CIFAS marker which equals to no bank would accept me. ?

They won't tell you if they have loaded a CIFAS marker against you, which is why you need to send a SAR to CIFAS. The letter telling you to arrange alternative banking facilities is a general message in every closure letter when they no longer want to have any business with you, even if they have loaded a CIFAS.
  • Is this thread still rumbling along after @olofmeister's suggestion that they withdrew £197 in coins from an ATM. Can't decide if @olofmeister was joking, or mistook a slot machine for an ATM - £197 was a good win though.
  • whats so odd about £197?
It's possible that the amount was chosen to be just below some threshold where more serious checking of the original transaction might take place.

I do recommend you open another bank account. Even if your current one continues to be usable, it's convenient to have two or more accounts (for example, in case the bank's computer system does not work, which is a common event).

Try Nationwide. They don't have business in the United States, so they are not so uptight about the chance of being fined.

whats so odd about £197? I could wrote it was £200 so it doesnt look so odd but I wanted to be specific.

Probably the fact that you cannot withdraw that amount from an ATM as you claimed?

Those at my local Barclays branch allow you to select and dispense in denominations of your choosing - and this includes coins. These are, however, the newer internal machines that replaced the cashiers in that branch, so presumably have more functionality than your average ATMs.

Wasn't aware that that existed! Still not buying the OPs story though :rotfl:

Could you tell us which Branch of Barclays this is, please? This is very intriguing.

He could mean the automated tills inside a lot of banks - the ones that take the money through a slot then counts it for you - they also pay out.
  • So, does that mean they dispense cash based on you putting a card and PIN in the machine, or do they let you put money in and then allow you to draw it back out in different denominations - e.g. coins, smaller value notes?

I asked Barclays (via 'chat') if they have any ATMs that dispense coins and they said 'no'. I queried that, and they said I should call them up to talk about it, but I haven't.
