  • I am on npower may 16 fixed duel fuel and would like to change to npower fixed dec 16. Would I be able to change through the cheap energy club and get the cash back rather than through npowers site? I have had no problems with npower up to now I do not want to start creating problems what do you think?
  • @alipali9

Well I just changed via the CEC from eon to eon in October and I'm expecting my cash back soon. I had no issues and the change in tariff happened within a few days.
  • Thanks will give it a go. I was just concerned it would confuse power.

Just make sure you are paying enough to cover your annual usage. It's easy enough to do - take your annual usage for 12 months in kWh for each fuel (it's probably be shown on your latest bill), work out the annual cost yourself for the tariff you are now on, include any discounts and then VAT at 5%, divide the total by 12 and that's what you ought to be paying per month. If it all agrees, then enjoy your saving! :)

  • Using Cheap Energy Club for comparison and see that I can do better than current ExtraEnergy (Bright Fix Price Dec '15 v1). CEC suggests "if you have less than 50 days to go on your fix - you shouldn't be charged any penalties for leaving." However the ExtraEnergy people, having initially confirmed this, now say I've got to get to the end of the contract before I switch - either to one of their other tariffs or to a different provider. Is this 50-day penalty waiver enshrined in legislation or can the company conveniently ignore it?
Also, if I sign up for a switch now, to take advantage of the Club's collective Cashback, does the switch actually take effect at end of present contract, or at some random date when the companies get round to it? The timescale on these things seems quite indeterminate.
    Thanks.

The energy supplier MUST, by the terms of their licence, inform you of the end of your fixed term between 49 and 42 days of the end of that term. Once you have reached the 49 day point you can change suppliers without penalty. You can commence the switching process before reaching the 49 day mark as long as the actual switch date is within. As you are well over the notification period did they notify you ? The switch will take place when it happens, generally 2 to 6 weeks. Start now and once your supplier has been informed they cannot increase your rates at the end of term as long as you are in the process of switching.
  • Many thanks for reply; yes, they did notify me by email. The 'initial' confirmation of no penalty from ExtraEnergy occurred before this notification, the claim that I couldn't leave without penalty before end of term was made after receiving email notification.
I shall commence switching now, as I'm well within the 49 days of end of term. If they insist on charging a penalty, what recourse do I have?

If necessary, make a formal complaint. If they fail to resolve your complaint to your satisfaction after eight weeks then you can refer it to the Ombudsman Services: Energy.

You may find it easier to process your complaint if you lodge it through <Resolver>.
