People should remember it`s the bank`s responsibility for the DD.
If too much is taken it`s the banks that have to refund not the power companies.

I am with EON, on a fixed rate, but I owe them over £700. I pay £65 a month DD for dual fuel, I think it is up for renewal in the new year. Am I right in thinking I can't switch without paying the debt first?
    Not necessarily.

I thought that too, until recently. You may find posts #2721 - #2724 (this thread) of some interest.

In order to object to a switch on the grounds of debt, the supplier must have actually demanded payment. Sending a statement showing a debit balance, on its own, would not be sufficient grounds for the supplier to object to the switch.

However, the old supplier will send you a bill, including a demand for payment, once you have switched. So you need to be in a position to settle the bill soon afterwards.

That's my take on the issue, anyway. Hope it helps.

Interesting post but so much of it is difficult to apply to a stone built, 1840s house with very little double glazing. The heating timer has only two settings and the only thermostats are on the radiators which were installed, by a previous owner, beside the door of each room. If we leave the doors open, the corridors warm up but not the rooms.

Can't find the original post by Lewis Cropley, but I am trying it out. Seems to corroborate my putting on the heating "just a touch", to feel warmer. Would like to know more.

There is a copy of the post <here>.

It would seem that the idea is a tad controversial but I do subscribe to the notion that a lower flow temperature is less likely to warm up the fabric of a building. The thing is, I have always thought that the warmth in the fabric of the building makes a positive contribution to comfort because it reduces downdrafts from cold surfaces.

It'll be interesting to hear how you get on.

  • I am currently with Ovo on a fixed tarrif which is due to finish on 15th December. I was surprised to find that they are no longer quite as competitive as they were.
I checked prices and found that I could save around £70. so I rang them to see if they could improve their offer. They said that there was nothing they could do, so I informed them that I would be leaving them at the end of my contract. All credit to them, I was informed that I could start the change straight away and there would be no cancellation charges as I am close to the end of my contract.
I have now found that I can save even more by using different companies for gas and electricity, about £110 plus cashback too of £20 for each one. Also there is no cancellation charge for the gas company.
I always thought it was cheaper to go Dual Fuel but this is obviously not the case.
I am sorry to leave Ovo as their customer service is top notch and they pay 3% interest on any credit balance.
    But needs must.

. . . I was informed that I could start the change straight away and there would be no cancellation charges as I am close to the end of my contract.
Under Ofgem's Retail Market Review, suppliers will be required to give customers a 42-day switching window before the end of a contract, and up to 20 days after, during which prices must be held and no early-termination fee can be charged.

I'm not sure when this requirement will start to be be forced on suppliers but it looks as though Ovo have started to implement the spirit of the new Licence Conditions already.

Their customer service does seem to be head and shoulders above the big six. :)

  • Used the comparison site and chose E-ON then registered with Energy Club. Got my Welcome pack wrong tariff shown - phoned Eon they say MSE request for credits to bill. Checked Energy club shows Tesco rewards - they can change it and I can start again bu I will lose £30 cashbook - Do not know how to check what MSE put through - Do I stay on the tariff I did not request? or what. First time I have used the website for deals

If you log in to energy club it should show you what tariff has been put through.
It`s no use going on the wrong tariff just because of the cashback.
  • I always thought it was cheaper to go Dual Fuel but this is obviously not the case.
I remember being surprised when i discovered this a few years ago - ended up taking my gas and electric away from a dual fuel deal with one of the big'uns to 2 different suppliers. It also helped that via quidco the sum of the 2 switches' cashback was more than for a single dual fuel switch (though my decisions on where to switch were made for the tariff savings alone, so the cashback as an extra bonus!).

I've spent the last 4 hours looking at moving my (separate) gas & elec again and a switch of my gas *only* looks like it'll yield a bigger saving that switching both - unfortunately the switching sites don't seem to check that -- if you select duel fuel that's what you get, it doesn't say "hey, actually if you dont mind the hassle of 2 suppliers then just switch your gas...". Remeniscent of the rail companies' 2 singles being cheaper than a return etc,...

(Now I just need to figure out who the heck 'Zog' are....)

Interesting stuff. I've just compared fixed tariffs for my usage and going separately with two other suppliers (in the Zog category :)) works out £107 or 7% cheaper than going for the best dual fuel option, which happens to be with one of the big 6.
