I'm a first time home buyer looking to completing the purchase next week. Can anyone give some advice on who would be a good supplier to go with?
Occupants would be myself, wife and 4yr old child. moving into 3 bed semi detached. Also I have no idea how much energy we consume. A lot of unknowns basically! Any help would be appreciated :)

Unless you have a reason not to, and bearing in mind this is a money saving site, dare I suggest the cheapest?

Follow the advice given in the article linked to in the OP :)

To get you started, I would suggest you consider yourselves to be a <medium user> (according to Ofgem). That would be 16,500 kWh pa for gas and 3,300 kWh pa for electricity (These values are currently under review). Use these consumption values in comparison sites to compare estimates of your annual energy bill from different suppliers' tariffs. The above figures assume you have both electricity and gas supplied to the property.

It will be up to you to select the supplier/tariff which best suits your needs but, generally, the cheaper the better I'd say.

    Your website comparison completely wrong.

It claimed I would save £173 pa by switching from EDF Blue Sept 14 to Flow Energy, but when I entered the identical data in Flow's own website it stated that my energy bill would be £2395 pa instead of £2292 pa with EDF!!!

It's not the first time I have seen this effect, and it also happens with other comparison sites as well. You must ALWAYS check the figures with the site you wish to move to, and you should also always use your actual consumption in kWh for the comparison, not the financial jiggery pokery that some prefer you to use. Also be alert for those that set the monthly direct debit artificially high to ensure that they always owe you money at the end of the term, never the other way around. It's a chore I hate, but it has to be done.

It's not clear what you were comparing with what but you need to be careful when making comparisons.

Don't forget that all energy companies, lately, have been increasing their prices year-on-year. Flow have probably used the EDF rates available now to new customers - not to you as an existing customer. As a new customer to EDF you would perhaps pay £173 more than if you were a new customer to Flow.

    Hope that helps.

    Welcome alfeus.

Sorry but who's website? Have you informed them? Are you sure?

If you would like anyone here to help you, please confirm the following:
    1. Which comparison site did you use?
    2. What is your anticipated annual usage in kWh you input?
    3. Which supply region are you in (or first part of your postcode)

I do hope you come back and provide these details, otherwise all the time and effor you spent signing up to this site and posting will have been wasted.

If you do provide the information requested, I'm more than happy to check out the alleged error and, if you are proven correct, I am sure we can get the error sorted out. :)

quick question about this - i assume this is through the cheap energy club.

i have just bought a house and used this service which suggested oneof the npower deals as best for my area and circumstances. it has came to our attention however that the supplier to the home is already npower and we have had a letter saying we are on the standard rate.

so my question is, does the switchig service work if you are switching tarrifs with the same provider or not?

    cheers

I have responded to this in the thread you created asking this question:

  • Hi, i am new to this...I have done a switch this morning through MSE cheap energy club (including bank details for DD) to swap to better deal with npower. I have not had a confirmation email as yet from anywhere to say I have started the process. I am worried that it has not worked, but don't want to do it again just in case it generates a duplicate application.
Has anyone gone through the process, and could tell me how long it takes for first confirmation email to come through? The Faq's suggests, "you are emailed every step if the way".
    Thankyou
