Is anyone else fed up with this constant switching only to find your new provider raises the price a couple of months later and you have to switch again. Is it really worth the trouble? I've just had a letter from Eon informing of the price rise and my first reaction was on no, here we go again, can I be bothered.

Yes, I agree. I have had the same supplier for about four years, and just cannot be bothered to go chasing around looking for someone cheaper. Probably after the next round of increases the company I change to will increase their price, and the company I was with will be cheaper !
Thank you for reading this message.
  • I'm new to posting on MSE. If I'm asking in the wrong thread, please let me know.
As with everybody else here, I'm concerned with the costs of fuel increases. Up till now I've checked with comparison engines near the end of each contract I've been on and switched to the next cheapest one I could find. In the last 2 or 3 years this has turned out to be E-ON with the Fixonline series. Now, however, I'm considering a long term fix like EDF Fixed Price 30 June 2015.
What is the feeling - could this be a good step or not?
  • A word of warning as far as getting the rewards from the comparison websites.

I applied to switch a few months ago through moneysupermarket.com and never got my £30. What happened was that (as recommended by MSE) I tried several comparison sites and eventually chose moneysupermarket as the best reward, as all the best tariffs were the same price. Trouble was, that having dutifully used the MSE link, when I finally chose moneysupermarket, I then went straight back to them and as I therefore wasn't going via MSE, it didn't trigger the cashback.

I called them last week and they said they would honour it as goodwill, but being forewarned of the pitfall would have been preferable.

Saying that, Eon have now put the price up and I am thinking of switching again under the 14 day opt-out anyway.
  • Hi, I'm trying to look on the comparison sites for gas and electric but I'm currently on British Gas Essentials tarrif and it doesn't show up on any of the lists, so how can I compare prices?
    Thanks.

    Hello All

We bought a newbuild in Oct but didnt move in until a few weeks ago as we were having work done.

The builders put the electricity in our name and we have been paying nominal bills as comsumption was low but I think that we should switch as all the comparison site are saying we could save approx £350 per year.

Now it may sound silly but we have never done anything like this before and its a maze!!!

Do i have to notify the current supplier in writing or by phone call and can i sign up to another provider today online...and they will sort out the switch?

    Please help!
    Thanks

You only need to place your order with the new supplier (its usually best to see who is offering the most cashback with your new supplier out of https://www.quidco.com or https://www.topcashback.co.uk after you identified who was cheapest on a switching site and then place the order starting at the cashback site after also clearing your web browser cookies and not from the switching website who otherwise get the cashback) as placing the new order automatically informs your old supplier you are leaving them.

The old supplier then writes to you to tell you that the switch is in progress and checking it is not a mistake. They may also telephone you making various false promises it will be cheaper for you to stay with them if they switch you on to some tariff where you have to pay a year up front. Ignore them as if you get a decent cashback from https://www.topcashback.co.uk or https://www.quidco.com you will still be better off leaving them.

Thanks NonGeographicalMan, we are with Eon and they did send a 14 day notice letter, can i just ignore it as we are out of time anyway and do the switch?

What was the 14 day notice letter about exactly?

Basically Eon sent a letter saying that there were price hikes on the way and that we had 14 days to notify them if we wished to change or they would put up the prices on the tariff.

Just checked the plan were are on and there are no get out fees, so hopefully i will be ok??

    Any ideas?
