In May last year I switched gas & electricity supplier through moneysupermarket.com and received an email from them confirming the switch and stating that I would receive my £30 cashback once they had confirmation from my new energy supplier that I had indeed switched. They stated that this should take 2-3 months, but it may take as long as 6 months.
To date I still haven't received my cashback and when I chased it up they said that I wasn't entitled to it because I went to moneysupermarket.com directly from google (although I actually went through moneysavingexpert.com) :(
I have now forwarded moneysupermarket's original email back to them and asked them to pay up as promised. If they still won't pay do I have any way of forcing them to honour their promise of cashback and/or is there anyone that I can complain to about this?

There's usually not a lot you can do.

The problem is that all these sites depend on the referral site. You may have gone via MSE, but if you or anyone else had ever gone direct or via another site previously using your computer, those 'tracks' may still be left and that messes up the whole thing.

There are instructions to how to prevent this elsewhere (essentially clearing cookies and browsing history, etc and sometimes security settings might prevent proper tracking) but if the supplier says you went another way other than via MSE to their site, presumably that is what their records show ... and I don't think you can prove otherwise.

That's why Martin says don't bank on getting any cashback until the cashback in in your bank.

Surely you mean that not clearing cookies and browsing history before commencing visiting a website where you want cashback to track may cause that transaction not to be tracked if you had previously visited the site paying the cashback from somewhere else other than the moneysavingexpert.com website?

Scottish Power are giving £62.62 through Topcashback at the moment, they also came top for price on my search with USwitch. I'll be doing this as it's double the £30 on offer from moneysupermarket!

    Not well worded, admittedly :o

I tried to combine two separate things. and made a pigs ear of it. To clarify, to get improved success:
    1. Clear cookies, history etc.
    2. Ensure security settings are not set so tightly that may prevent proper tracking.

  • Warning to fellow MSE users ... having read the notes on this page I transferred energy supplier last summer using Energylinx. They haven't paid out the promised cashback.

Strangely unlike other switchers they don't pay out the cashback automatically, but require to to send various proofs to them. I've don't this and tried to contact them subsequently with no reply.

That is correct, The terms of the offer specifically request you provide them with confirmation you are on supply, so either a confirmation letter or a copy of a bill from the new supplier.
There's a freepost address you can use to send this to them.

Have you also supplied them with the bank account details of where you want the money credited to, as per the instructions?
Without this, they obviously cannot transfer your cashback.

The website gives various ways you can contact them, phone, fax, email and a postal address.
Write to them recorded delivery if you really are being blanked by every avenue.

I have just pressed send on my switching form. :) My discounted rate ends today.

I have discovered through moneysupermarket that I would be best to stay with my supplier and choose a different tariff. I have done this using their link. My question is as I have stayed with same supplier but switched tariff would I be eligible for the cashback? I thought it worth a try anyway.

If you've gone via a comparison site, and input the correct current supplier/tariff details (which you need to do if you hope to switch), then the comparison site will say whethjer or not you can switch via them. If you can, then I would suggest you are entitled to any cashback on offer (unless it says otherwise).

... but usually changes of tariff with the same supplier are not able to be done via comparison sites.

Thanks it said it had gone through so I will have to wait and see.
  • I'm in process of checking dual fuel deals using Martin's guide - I've run through the comparison sites Uswitch and Energyline and Moneysupermarket all give Eon as the best deal. Uswitch and Energyline both give the exact same figure and same tariff - however Moneysuoermarket gives the same tariff yet £50 cheaper?

I've checked and the same figures were used in the three sites - any ideas why the difference?
