    Hi all readers

I have recently bought a house (my 1st ever) and now need to find gas and electricity supplies i have been on most sites and seen the ITS TIME TO SWITCH notice up on this site (I am a fan of Martin) but I am struggling as ive no idea of what my usage will be or even where to start to save im concerned as prices are jumping through the roof at this time. so is there any 1 that can at least give me some advice ???

    many thanks

You will first need to register with the existing suppliers ... then you can switch.

Most comparison sites offer a suggestion if you have no idea of usage
(... but it's just a guess by them, so the output is based on that guess ;))

I have just switched to E on (they are taking my first D/D on 1st Feb) and am tied into a 2 yr deal. I feel cheated though as they said that I would save with them (thats the reason I changed) and now I find out that they are increasing their rates on 4th Feb (9% electricity and 3% gas. I feel that they should have told me that their prices were increasing in feb, I now feel cheated. What can I do?

    Hi dycebabe

I'm sorry you feel cheated following your switch to us.

We are advised about price changes at virtually the same time as the press. Therefore, the agent you spoke to when arranging the switch would not have known about the increase and would have advised you based on the prices available at the time.

As Premier has advised in response to another post, you don't need to accept this increase. So long as you change supplier within a certain time frame, you will not be affected by the new prices.

We will send you a letter advising of the increase. Please let us know within 20 working days of receiving the letter that you wish to leave as a result of the increase.

Following this, we need to receive the notice of transfer from your new supplier within 15 working days of you letting us know you're leaving.

This option is described in the letter I referred to above.

You will need to contact us about this as the difference between the old and new prices will be given as an ex-gratia payment applied to your account by an agent.

Again, I'm sorry you're unhappy with our announcement but hope you find the above useful. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

hi thought i would finally switch gas electriciy, with e.on and ive had a letter today to say more prices are are going up from the 10th of january, the bit that really stuck in my throat was that if i want to move, i have to give them 20 days noticed, whereas they can increase prces just like that!

    Hi stolt

Sounds like you may be on one of our Track and Save plans. These tariffs guarantee to be cheaper than British Gas standard prices for the duration of the plan.

Several of these products have been re-priced following the recent British Gas standard price increase. Our new prices took effect on 10 January 2011.

There are no time restrictions on these tariffs and you can start a switch immediately, either to another tariff or supplier.

Also, as Premier says, if you decide to change supplier, you will not be affected by the new prices. Provided, that is, the switch completes within the required time frame.

Hope this is useful stolt. Give me a shout if you need any more details as will be happy to help.

  • For anyone tempted to take up the MSE promoted £35 Amazon voucher offer via SimplySwitch - do first search the forums to see the experience others have enjoyed.

I am still trying to get vouchers following my switch last July!
  • For anyone tempted to take up the MSE promoted £35 Amazon voucher offer via SimplySwitch - do first search the forums to see the experience others have enjoyed.

I am still trying to get vouchers following my switch last July!

Be careful of any Amazon promotional offers as honesty and accuracy does not seem to be at the forefront of their list of priorities.

When I bought a TomTom Satnav from Amazon in December 2009 Amazon tried to bludgeon me in to applying for their credit card by claiming I would get £15 off this satnav purchase if I did so.

However after applying for the card it then turned out the £15 off was only against a future purchase on the card and not this purchase of the Satnav but worse still unknown to me when I applied the card issuer for the Amazon card was MBNA with whom I already had two credit cards. MBNA then deemed my wish to have a third card with them as excessive and without my permission closed down a longstanding card with them on which I had a £15,000 credit limit that MBNA regularly has 9 month interest free balance transfer and cash advance offers on at 0% just because I hadn't used it for a few months.

Only after working very hard with MBNA and finding a helpful human being with decision making power in their credit control section did I get the Amazon card cancelled and my longstanding MBNA card with the £15,0000 credit limit reinstated.

Even though I had closed their credit card Amazon kept on trying to make me use it to make all subsequent purchases with them until I deleted it off my list of available cards.

So I would be very wary indeed of any promotional offers involving supposed cash back through Amazon.
  • Is anyone else having problems with getting their £35 Amazon vouchers from Simply Switch for moving DF to another supplier? I moved from Atlantic to EON using Simply Switch and have a confirmation email from them but 4 months on they now say I didn't use their site!! Their phone lines are always busy and no call back works. Email worked eventually but despite proof that I used the correct link they are reneging on their offer.
Martin should maybe reconsider the * beside their name as while they may help his site they certainly aren't being helpful or honest with site users.
  • I have been with E-ON for 2 years now - I am on the saveonline plan. i have been paying £121 fixed monthly debit for a year for both gas and electricity. My total usage for the year was £65 over my direct debits which amounts to about a fiver a month yet i got a letter yesterday saying it is going up to £174 per month - a 44% increase.
I phoned up E-on but the person on the other end of the phone was about as usefull as a chocolate t-pot!!!
I am now trying to look for a deal with another company asap.
Has anyone else recently left e-on and who did you go too?

    Hi esjjk

I'm sorry the agent you spoke to wasn't very helpful.

Which version of Saveonline are you on?

I'm only speculating here, but if you've been on the tariff for about 2 years, I suspect it's version 1.

This ended towards the end of last year and, unless you told us otherwise, you will automatically have been placed on our standard online product, EnergyOnline.

EnergyOnline is more expensive than Saveonline 1 and this may have triggered the Direct Debit increase.

Another thought; Direct Debits are set up to achieve as near to a zero balance as possible by the annual review in the spring.

Depending on your review date, you may now be only 3 to 4 months from this. If we have just produced a bill, your arrangement will have been reviewed based on the current prices and what we expect you will use during this period. I suspect this is different from the period you're looking at.

If it looks as though your account will build up a debt before the annual review, the Direct Debit will be increased to offset this.

Is there an outstanding balance on your account at the moment?

I would expect accounts to be in credit at the moment to meet higher winter bills. If there is a debit balance at the moment, your previous payments were probably not covering your actual usage. Again, triggering an increase.

As I said, I'm really only speculating here and you're doing exactly the right thing in using the comparison sites to see what the best deal for you is.

Sorry again for the response you received when you called but hope the above gives you a couple of possibilities of why the Direct Debit was increased. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

  • Hi there,

Well as the title explains I have no idea which is the best plan to switch to.

I have read through the switching article 3 times and i'm not clear on whether even if I switch now to edf will my gas/elec bills go up again or even more at the end of march.

    Bit more info.....

currently with scottish power paying £1629 per year on dual fuel...... the best deal comes up with edf but i'm confused over whether the prices will go up again in March, please could somebody advise as to what this means?

Any information will be greatfully appreciated!!

    Thank you xxx
