Energy: Find the cheapest supplier & earn cashback

Hi all,
Just thought I'd let you all know that my bills have actually been reduced without having to change.
18 months ago I changed to Eon's internet dual fuel tariff, which saved me a little money each month over my previous supplier ( I had changed before) and I also got a case of wine from Uswitch into the bargain.
Recently I started getting letters to my home address for a 'Mr Hancock' who doesn't actually exist (some kind of cashback website scam) anyway he'd applied to change suppliers at my address.
After recieving a letter from Eon saying they didn't want me to go I phoned them and explained the situation.
They wanted to ensure I stayed with them and offered me a package £10 cheaper per month than my existing one:T.
So, if you have already changed to a very competitive rate, before changing again it may be worthwhile speaking with your current provider.
It does mean no case of wine, but they are sending me a free energy monitor so I may be able to recude my bills further. Cheers all0 -
Hi,
I have a quick question since the email today about now being the time to compare energy tariffs again.
My Mum is in a council house, bless. Ever since she moved into her current house 3 years ago, she's been using these pre-pay top up key things, which was already there when she moved in, I guess the person in the house before wasn't too hot on paying their bills.
I keep telling her it's more expensive, but she claims it isn't when she compares her bills with her friends.
She recently shifted the keys from Southern Scottish (whatever they are called now) to British Gas before Brit Gas did the price rise, and is now complaining, surprise surprise, that £10 gas which would last around 5 days before, is now only lasting 3 days since it kicked in with British Gas. Probably not helped by the fact my sister was recently made redundant and is home most of the day and burning more gas, but that's by the by.
My main question is from people with experience or in the know, is there any kind of minimum contract with these key meter things? I'd like to go through getting her setup on a direct debit tariff as soon as possible.
However I also feel the charge to get the meter changed will probably put her off, as she'll say she simply can't afford it. So anyone who has any advice on the cheapest possible way to do this whilst still getting a good deal would be appreciated.0 -

Hi, Maybe I'm missing something here, but could someone explain what the advantage is of switching from a supplier that has just announced an upcoming price rise to one that hasn't yet announced a price rise ?
If all the energy suppliers tend to follow suit, what's the point of leaving one supplier who has announced a increase of a known percentage for one that will inevitably follow suit but with an unknown - possibly larger - increase ?
e.g. I'm with Scottish Power now and could, in theory, move to EDF, save £99 in bills (according to the comparison sites) and get the £100 new customer bonus, but it would cost me £50 in penalties to leave Scottish Power early. Overall saving = £149 for the year. BUT - if EDF jack their prices up in, say, March, I could have gone to all that trouble for nothing !
Am I missing something here ?0 -
Guys, just a quick update and a bit of positive news. We surprisingle had a letter through the post yesterday from nPower advising us that because of the way they charged us for our gas usage in 2007, and because Consumer Focus got on their case, they have offered us a £33 rebate. Don't know if anybody else wants to jump on this bandwagon to try to get a rebate? Thought it was worth mentioning :money:0

I had a letter AGES ago & yesterday remembered I had it & I too have a rebate of £60 odd due back to me.
I am currently dual fuel with EON, V3 just finished so now on energyonline.
I don't fully get this comparison stuff but as I have a printout of my online bill of what I used last year, 5996 kWh elec & 16489 kWh gas would this suffice? I currently pay £109 DD per month.
Thanks0 -
Also there may be cancellation charge of EON fix online if I switch before 1st Dec.
When is the best day to switch to avoid EON cancellation charge and benefit from Welcome bonus?
Hi Chichi
Just to confirm acc's excellent advice; you will not receive a cancellation fee in respect of the Fixonline 3 tariff. This is because you have completed the full term of the contract.
Also, we don't usually give discount on final bills when customers change supplier. However, as you've completed the full term of Fixonline 3 right up to the end date, you will receive all the discount applicable to this tariff even if part of this falls within the final bill.
The only discount you will miss out on is for any usage between 2 December 2010 and the date the account changes hands.
Hope this is useful Chichi. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

We are currently on the Online Energy Saver 7 with SP (which moves automatically over to Online Energy Saver 7 (Dec 2011)) for existing customers. I want to compare this deal via MSE/cashback websites but nobody has registered this new tariff yet. I have tried to do a manual calculation but it just blows my mind every time I pick the calculator up, any ideas as to where I can go to get a clear understanding of what I could be paying over the next 12 months with SP with this new "discounted" package? I have actually called SP for help on this but they probably know why I want this info and were baffling with their answer!! P.S We've got till Jan 17th to switch before we have to pay the £30 get-out fee! Appreciate anybody's help!!0
