Energy: Find the cheapest supplier & earn cashback

I recently used a link from this website to change from swalec to british gas. I was told that by using the link I would get a cashback cheque for £30. The changeover was completed by the beginning of February. I have still not recieved a cheque.
I see this has now been responded to in your thread asking the same question

E.On sent me a letter saying that my contract shall be ending on June 1. When can I theorectically start to go elsewhere? Wait till after the 1st or start doing it now considering the switch takes weeks anyhow?0

Start doing it now. The quickest a switch ever goes through is about 3 weeks and usually it takes between four and eight weeks. So there is no way if you place a switch order today that it will go through before June 1st.0 -

Hi m5rcc
You will be ok to start the switch now. As NGM says, it takes several weeks for switches to complete. This will take it beyond the 1 June 2010 end date of your current tariff.
The tariff we will put you on after 1 June, unless you tell us otherwise, will be our standard online product. This carries a much lower rate of discount than you previously received. Therefore, it will be in your best interests to start the move asap.
The standard online product does not have any cancellation fees so you will not be penalised in this way.
However, we don't give discount on final bills when switching supplier. Although, as you will have completed the full term of your previous contract, you will receive all the discount up to 1 June even if part of this falls within the final bill.
As no discount will be given after 1 June, it again makes sense to start the switch asap.
Hope this is useful. Give me a shout if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

Malc,
Your honesty from an employee of one of the big energy companies is certainly extremely refreshing.
However there does seem to be something very wrong with the current system of competition in the energy industry where only a company's newest customers get its cheapest prices...........0 -
I'm so confused!!!
Is now a good time to switch or not?
We are currently with EDF duel fuel and they have been taking massive amounts of money from us, and we have just requested a refund, around £120 for EACH fuel. (It's been a hectic year with severe ill health in the family so I didn't keep my eye on the ball).
I want to find the cheapest for us, one that won't rise in six months, and would be nice to get cashback or vouchers, but am confused about capping, internet etc.
We are on one salary now and have cut back on everything we can - so don't want to make a stupid move - could someone walk me through the process please?

If you read through the general articles on the utilities section of this website about switching energy supplier and a few pages of the posts in this thread it really ought to give you the articles you need to come to a conclusion. To ask for people to explain everything you to again from the ground up seems rather like asking us to reinvent the wheel.
The basic rule is that these days you need to move supplier at least once a year to avoid getting screwed by your existing supplier with uncompetitive prices. However you need to watch out for penalties for leaving your old supplier if you are in the first year with them.
You also want look for the highest cashback available once you have identified the cheapest possible suppliers. You can find details of the cashbacks on offer at www.topcashback.co.uk and www.quidco.com and run energy price comparisons for the lowest cost supplier at your address for your level of consumption at www.energylinx.co.uk, www.whichswitch.co.uk and www.uswitch.com amongst some of the better known energy price comparison websites.
Don't think of switching energy suppliers as a one off permanent solution. Its something you have to keep under review all the time as the cheapest supplier today in your area is almost never the cheapest supplier in your area in 6 months time.0 -

Many thanks for the kind words NGM; they are much appreciated. :T
I can't speak for the other energy suppliers but our cheapest prices are available to both new and existing customers provided they are eligible for the tariff in question.
For instance, our online tariffs are available to any credit customer with a standard meter who pays with a Monthly Direct Debit and manages their account online regardless of how long they have been with us.
Hope this makes things a little clearer NGM. Give me a shout if I can help further as will be happy to do so.

Thanks, Malc. May I take it, then, that it's OK to switch between the tariifs that are available to you on the e.on website (after you've logged in) without incurring a penalty.0 -
Well I had an interesting telephone cal from BG today (am transferring to Scottish power). Went something like this (edited version)
BG - if you stay we'll give you a deal that will save you an extra 4% and you can do everything on-line (explanation of deal)
Me - That's 4% off the standard tariff, but I'm not on the standard tariff how does it compare to click 6?
BG I don't know that's an old tariff so I can't work it out.
Me - okay then, what is the saving over websaver 7?
BG - websaver 7 is 6% discount on our standard tariff
Me - so why are you offering me 4% discount off the standard tariff ?
BG - well websaver 7 has just popped up, tariffs can do that, they vary from day to day...
What shysters! Needless to say I decided to take the cashback and swap to Scottish Power!I'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0
