  • sorry to say this but you will be paying a lot more than that, we are the same as you as we have just moved into our new 3 bedroom house 2 months ago and we are paying £100.00 per month on electricity. and £50.00 per month on gas. both are supplied by eon so you need to shop around for the best deal.

The above usage figures are actually very high for a 3 bed house unless it is an old detached 3 bed house with no insulation and you haven't fitted any energy saving light bulbs and tend to leave all your lights on in several rooms all night.

I live in a 2 bed converted flat in a former Victorian country house that has a very large kitchen living room (total flat area 81 sq metres or 900 sq feet) and my electricity use averages £32.50 per month and my gas use £37.50 per month. The heating is gas by a 19 year old Glowworm Fuelsaver F boiler.

Your use figures are very high indeed for a 3 bed place and suggest to me almost no effort to be economical so it is quite of wrong of you to scare this new home owner by suggesting their bills will be this large.

Combined bills of £100 per month in total for gas and electricity would be much nearer the average for full time occupancy of a standard 3 bed semi detached or terraced house.

I think you have a serious problem with insulation - or lack of it. Have you checked whether you can improve it?

These are the averages for April 2010, as used by many local authorities in assessing benefit levels. Only a guide, but they're provided by the National Association of Financial Assessment Officers and probably a fair one:

Annual Average Heating Costs (eg gas, electric)

    Single Person

    Flat/Terraced House £957
    Semi-Detached £1016
    Detached £1236

    Couple

    Flat/Terraced House £1260
    Semi-Detached £1338
    Detached £1628

Probably rather more than your £60pm, Steve, but it will depend very much on the type of house, its age, the insulation, and your personal lifestyle.

As a first time homeowner, Im moving into my house next week. Are there any 'offers or deals' I can take advantage of for supplying my Gas and Electric? Id prefer to do duel fuel, have paperless or online billing (if this saves money), and want to pay for what I use, i.e. no estimated bills.

Can anyone point me to what I should be looking at?! Im a complete novice to all this so any help is huge help!

    Anyone??

A bit about the property, its a 4 bed detached house and there will be 3 adults living there.

Try getting some quotes at www.uswitch.com, www.energylinx.co.uk, www.whichswitch.co.uk ete They will show who is the cheapest supplier for the level of use applicable to the previous owners if those owners are willing to tell you who is the current supplier and how much energy they have been using with them.

This will also show you that online tariffs are always cheaper than paper based ones. Also the answers that you are seeking seem to already be contained many times in the previous 58 pages of the thread but you seem to be expecting us to reinvent the wheel specially for you as though there is something totally unique about your particular 4 bed house. If you use Google for gas, electricity, cheapest etc you will find endless articles on the topic.

    Hi purplestar

Sorry for the delay replying...weekend and all that.

Can't see any difficulties at all transferring. A £20 deficit with a Direct Debit in place will not be considered as grounds for objection.

If you have only just started the switching process and the previous bill was end of March, the likelihood is your transfer will complete round about mid-May. This will give you approx 8 to 9 weeks of charges.

I would definitely say you will save a bit if you ask for a bill before the final bill is issued. The actual saving will depend on your tariff and the associated discount. Let us have your meter readings before the transfer date and ask for a bill.

I will stress about asking for a bill because if you don't the agent will just record the readings as the account will not be in the billing window.

Will be happy to do this for you nearer the time if you like. Just drop an email with your details to the address in my Public Profile.

Hope this answers your questions, purplestar. Again, give me a shout if I can help further as will be glad to do so. :)

    Malc

    Hi Malc,

Thanks for your help so far - I have sent you an email. Hope that's ok.
  • I am in the process of purchasing a repossessed flat which is all electric. The electric was cut off when the last owner left. Can anyone advise of the best current deals, connection charges and any potential cashback savings???

I am with British Gas for gas and electric and every comparison site brings up e-on as the best match for me. I'd like to switch but the thing is, I pay a monthly dd and owe money on both accounts. I've never switched before, is it likely I will have to pay off the extra money in one go when I change over?

Yes, you will be expected to pay it within seven days (or so) of receipt of your final bill. Part of the procedure of switching is to check your meters and see if you can afford to pay off any balance.

If the debt is high or has been ongoing your supplier can refuse the transfer.

Which happens can depend on reason for balance eg, if the readings have been estimated and British Gas do not know about it yet the transfer will tend to go through. But if British Gas already know about the debt they will keep the supply and refuse change. Generally.

I recently used a link from this website to change from swalec to british gas. I was told that by using the link I would get a cashback cheque for £30. The changeover was completed by the beginning of February. I have still not recieved a cheque.

What is the best deal for you is entirely dependent on where you live and how much electricity you use. There is not a magic bullet answer as you seem to presume. Also any reading of a few previous posts in the thread ought to have shown you that.

Run some comparisons through the checkers at https://www.energylinx.co.uk, https://www.uswitch.com and https://www.whichswitch.co.uk
