Just don't bin the old backups until you have a proven run on the new systems backup performance
  • "We want your Forum to live for at least another 17 years."

I wouldn't mind doing the same. Alas, 'migrating to a new platform' is not a human option.
Just don't anyone suggest switching off and switching on again.

When they say there "may be" a badge for helping to test the new forum you know not to pin your hopes too high.

Thought most of us would have grown out of needing stars and badges when we moved up to the "big school".

    Or is that just me?

Will the new forum hide posts from new users if its reported as spam?

Will it remove the spammers post from the main forum list? Even when its flagged as spam and removed that post remains in the main forum and shows as the latest active thread.

I am mildly suspicious and I do hope this is 'just' about improving the site for technical reasons.

Since our input was asked for, here's mine....

I have studied internet security and privacy for some years now. I have learned to use the internet much more privately to block the immense amount of tracking and spying going on. I have browser extensions which alert me (and automatically block) most, if not all, website trackers. MoneySavingExpert (I am sorry to say) is one of the worst sites I have ever visited, and I visit a lot. So in the unlikely event that his tracking/spying enterprise is not part of MSE's business model, I would ask that it is given some thought in the new design. I strongly doubt this request will be considered but I make it anyway.

For those who don't know (which is 99 % of people) EVERY time you see a facebook like button or other similar social sharing buttons on a website, that website is inviting Facebook (or whoever) to monitor and record your browsing habits. This information is then used in a plethora of ways, all of which you don't need and would not appreciate if you knew about them. Do not fall for the idea that not being a Facebook user makes this irrelevant. Look up "Facebook shadow profiles" to see why.

Every single thing we do online is monitored and used to profit from us and even psychologically manipulate us. This is not conspiracy theory, if only it were, it's fact. MSE is plastered with trackers for Amazon AWS, Google, Facebook and many other third party 'scripts' which users do not know they are 'communicating with' when they visit this site. MSE is no exception by any means, virtually all sites do this (and usually ignorantly and therefore 'innocently'), but being the size that it is, and being so rife with this stuff, I suspect MSE doesn't do it in ignorance at all as any large organisation with a web team know exactly what scripts and cookies are all about, and they know exactly what they are doing on their web pages.

Considering how MSE is a firm favourite for many people on subjects of rights and other morally-sound principles, I would like to request that the PRIVACY issue is looked at very hard in the new website build. If not, then you are offering a forum to help people secure their rights as consumers or as many other things, meanwhile helping (and perhaps profiting from) TRASHING those very same rights.

Before anyone argues (legitimately) that "you can't run a website without some of this stuff in", that is actually untrue but arguably true in terms of making a site 'pretty' and socially connected so people can share posts on Facebook etc. However there are plenty of alternative ways of doing this if the time is put into it. As a webmaster of several websites, I take that time (without pay) to protect my site visitors and ensure I am not helping the likes of Facebook/Google/Amazon to track them and everything they do, think, say, buy, sell..... So if I can, MSE can. I ask that you do so in the future.
