OP, if you live in 'Central London', then the £4pw you pay in road tax is trivial compared to what you must be paying for parking and the congestion charge?
(adrianC, you beat me to it) And, unless your vehicle is Euro 4 compliant, which most 2003 reg's will not be, then you will have the ULEZ charge on top of that.
So maybe a bit of perspective is needed here.

...and ULEZ for a 2003, so Euro3, petrol.

Oh really? So fuel has never been below £1.20 a litre here then.

According to a copy of Motor, October 1948, the Ford Anglia was the cheapest four-wheel car in Britain. In 1950, the Anglia – an ancestor of the current Ford Focus – would have set you back £310, the equivalent of £9,888 in today’s money.

The cost of a new car today, around £7k, with moany more extras.

The cheapest Ford today is a Ka+, Fords list price starts at £11,300 so it was cheaper back in the day.

Lots of cars below £10k, a much higher spec than the Ford Anglia, heated rear window, USB socket, DAB Digital radio

    Peugeot 108 - From £7698

So you don't want to compare like for like.

I'm sure an 80s Lada of FSO was cheaper than most modern new cars.

VED rates are pretty crazy. We have a Lexus IS300h which averages 47 mpg with VED of £10 and a Honda Jazz which averages 53 mpg with VED of £145. .... plus an old MGA roadster which probably averages in the 30s with zero VED.
  • The rates and rules are driven by all sorts of politics, pressure groups and grandstanding by people keen to please a lobby group, so there’s little rhyme or reason.

I’ve a lovely sports car from a few years back that rarely gets used, and will probably still be on the road in fifty years time, so is very environmentally friendly, but it still gets hit with the top rate.

If you want to own a car, it’s just one of the costs to bear.
  • I have a 2 litre Mazda 3 and my partner has a 1.2 litre Fiat 500. So a large hatchback and a tiny city car & our road tax is the same - £30.

The 1 litre Fiesta we had previously was about £120.

Check the VED rate when you buy a car!

    Completely agree.

When buying a car its one of the factors you have to take into account.

We are now up to 4 cars in my family (rural area - Maw, Paw & 2 teenagers with their own cars).

    Between all 4 we pay £70 VED (£0, £30, £20 & £20).

It almost a pleasure getting the annual reminders to pay.
Was it really "everybody" that was Kung Fu fighting ???
