Shocking price for vehicle tax or is it just me!

Options
My wife have Nissan Micra, 2003 model, it has a 1.3 engine, so it is a small car, and it is an automatic. We got our vehicle tax reminder letter and it says £200 for 12 months!

I haven't dealt with car stuff in a long time, so she asked me to look at it and pay it. It looks very expensive to me for vehicle tax or road tax, can someone let me know how they work out what you should be paying? And does £200 a year sound right?

Thank you.

Find your exact model and the VED rate will be there.

PS - I assume you mean 1.2 not 1.3? (There isn't a 1.3 Micra on that page). Or is yours actually a pre-2003 model? Even then there's no 1.3 model with £200 VED ... there are 1.4 models though.

Why do you expect anyone to spend valuable time in explaining this to you, when the information is freely available on the internet?

Thank you. I found what I was looking for. Although its correct, it still seems very expensive.

It's based on emissions. £200 is a Band G and only about halfway up the total number of bands. Could be worse - you could be paying £570.

If you want to reduce the cost, get a car with lower emissions. That'll almost certainly mean buying a newer car which will cost a fair chunk of money - more than you'd save on road tax over the next few years.

My husband has a 2l diesel that's only three years old and his road tax is only £30 a year. My 1.4l petrol car costs £185. His is a Volkswagen-group car (a Skoda) so I can't imagine it's emitting as little CO2 as they say, but the DVLA are satisfied so who are we to argue. :rotfl:

I completely agree. If I had it my way we wouldn't own a car. My wife feels its an essential item. I feel if you live in Central London you don't really need a car.

    Thanks.

I think we may £40 more because its an automatic. I noticed the same car for a manual paying £160. Its life I suppose.

It's all about the official CO2. That was fairly normal CO2 back in 2003 - more modern cars have much lower figures.
