I can't see what they can do if a licence is not returned.  After all, it's not an offence to lose a driving licence, so why should it be an offence not to return an old one?  But even if it is . . . "I was fully intending to return my old licence officer but I seemed to have lost it"  ;)

What do they do with the old licence halves?! Probably go into the shredder.

I applied slightly prematurely for my age 70+ licence, so they sent me another one also expiring on my 70th birthday! I am now expected to return two! I will wait until the new one arrives, which could be delayed . The photo on it is a good one, matching my passport, so I might keep one.

  • Perhaps common sense should prevail.  As they don’t provide a pre-paided envelope, it can’t be imperative that it’s returned.  No mention is made of proof of posting, so if they don’t receive and contact you, the response is obvious.
When you’ve checked the details are correct just cut it up and do whatever you consider to be correct.

    Welcome to the forum!

But I think it's unlikely that the OP has been waiting for five months for your advice.
  • Can't be that important they receive it back. When you pass your driving test and elect to receive your full licence automatically the DVSA shred the provisional at the test centre.
  • What happens if you have posted it and they say they don't have it?
Not everyone has the time to go to the post office to get proof of delivery etc and wait in the long queues etc and most people work.
Has anyone been challenged about the no return of an old licence as it is deemed as an offense I believe?

Applied for and received two new over 70 licence renewals now.
Not returned either of the old licences and it's never been followed up by DVSA.
If they did ask I would advise that they were posted using my local post box and suitably stamped. Now prove that I didn't if you are accusing me of telling fibs.
Or send a prepaid addressed envelope to facilitate returning them. Then I gladly would.

I have never done this and it's never been a problem. The new license should arrive in a few days at which point your motivation to look for envelopes and stamps will be about zero.

I have always kept the old license for a while in case they chased me for them but they never have and it must be 6 or 7 times now.
I wanted to put this too but wasn’t sure if I was giving the wrong advice 😂

I’ve changed address twice and never sent my old licence back, they’ve never chased me either. I have a card shredder that I’ve just put them in
  • A few are mentioning the cost of returning the old driving licence but I don't think it says to put a stamp on the envelope, only to return the old licence. Usually you get reminded 'not to forget the stamp' If you do put one on, there's more chance of tracking it but if it gets lost in the post....it's lost so can't return it.  Logically putting a stamp on is a waste of time and money if it's not necessary.

Ah, that well-known trick of not putting a stamp on a letter and hoping that the recipient will stump up the penalty in order to receive the mail.  I somehow can't see DVLA falling for that one.
